I don’t think they reject anybody in case some of the offered students decline their acceptance. Then they have the freedom to move down the list and offer other students. We will be at the get together on February 19. He loved Dr. Lin and always said he would go to Turing if offered.
@rubink @sorashiro @austexlonghorn My son is going for an informal revisit in a couple weeks to UT on his way to TAMU for an admitted students visit. I called the academic advising department for CS at UT to see about meeting or getting some questions answered about my son’s DE courses. In the course of conversation I asked if all of the Turing invitations had gone out and he said no, that Dr. Lin was working on that today and hoped to have them done today, but with admissions being so behind on the priority applications it has delayed their process. Also, he said there will be acceptances to Turing for regular decision applicants going out up until March 1st. He did not know if the acceptances are portal updates or mailed letters. So, it’s not a done deal which is the good news, but it means more ambiguous waiting. UT’s new priority application process has really created a bottleneck as you can hardly accept someone into Turing who hasn’t even been accepted to UT yet. Best of luck to everyone, patience for all.
I will add that - if it is similar to DS’s letter 2 years ago- Dr. Lin writes a personal note to the student.
So, based on this admission timeline- I could see him working furiously to get them finished up and sent out.
Good luck to those still waiting.
The wait will continue. Under the honors tab, clicked on details to find this new message:
Thank you for submitting your application to The University of Texas at Austin and your interest in Turing Scholars! Given the number of applications we’ve received and the increasing demand for some programs, we find that we must complete an additional review of your application before making a final decision.
We will do everything we can to provide a decision notification efficiently and no later than March 1. Thank you for your patience and interest in UT Austin!
@COMom09 Also have the same new message. Has anyone accepted to CS but not accepted yet to Turing seen anything different?
@comom09 @austexlonghorn Same message for us. I’m curious if Dr. Lin already had a “Turing candidates shortlist” prior to UTCS admission decision. If he did, the Turing selection decision should be a short wait. Good luck to all!
Hi, I am accepted to Turing and I think there are still many spaces for this honor program as we have created a Turing 22 group and there are only 11 or 12 people in there. Perhaps, some of those admitted students don’t check facebook or join the group but it is possible that there are still many remained space.
Where is the Turing 22 group and how can my son join?
@comom09 @jamesja @tyin20 My son got in UTCS/Turing as well. Is there any additional information on the Turing 22 group? Thanks.
You guys think Turing decisions will come out soon?
@sorashiro If you read through this thread some decisions went out late in December. Not all of the decisions have gone out, they got behind because admissions was behind. All decisions will be out by March 1 for Turing. The Turing reception for admitted students is already scheduled for 2/19, but more acceptances may be coming after that since they have until Mar. 1 and as people decline others may be invited.
@RubinK My son just got an email today that he was accepted! I’ve told him to get connected to the FB Turing 2022 page. He will look for it later today. Are you going to the goto_Turing event next Monday? We are not since he was just there on Friday.
@COMom09 Okay cool! Hope it’s this week then
@COMom09 That’s great to hear! Congratulations!! Yes, we’re planning to visit goto_Turing. Given that not all decisions are out yet, I’m not sure how many people are going to show up though.
@RubinK After getting in mid-December it seems like we have been waiting forever and had sort of given up much hope, so lots of excitement here. We had already committed to a visit to the CS department and admitted day at Purdue on 2/19. We will be talking tonight about whether to cancel that trip or not. I know UT has a stronger rep and a Turing acceptance really makes the decision seem obvious, but he hasn’t connected with the CS program people@P, only the science recruiter and with the merit $ the gap between is 10K less at Purdue and possibly more coming from Purdue. I feel like he should at least give them a listen and learn more about the program to make a fully informed decision. I checked the fares to Austin, but it’s too $$ at this point to change to get there anyway. I read on the CC threads last year at the reception Dr. Lin mentioned that there are scholarships that come out in March-would you report back on anything interesting that you hear at the reception? I wish we could go-I’m still processing that he got in! Be my eyes and ears and have a great time!
@COMom09 Its exciting indeed! I can certainly let you know anything interesting we learn there. We know a number of students who go to UT/CS/Turing, so we don’t really expect many surprises. As for Purdue vs UT, while Purdue is a great school, I think there are a number of benefits to being part of Turing in Austin - exposure to lot more advanced activities at school, being part of a more competitive cohort, being close to ever growing list of companies that are expanding/moving to Austin, and obviously the weather. Not to mention, Austin is a great city with a lot to offer outside UT. I spent many years in a reputed school not far from Purdue in the mid-west, and I think Austin/Turing is hands down a much better environment. Best of luck!
@RubinK Thanks so much for your perspective. I think the academic challenge and cohort is the biggest plus that our son sees and would be really good for him. It will be so much easier and less expensive to get in and out of Austin in addition to all the benefits you mentioned. Look forward to hearing about your visit when you get back. And any advice from your from the students you know about coming in as an OOS freshman is appreciated.
Just rejected from Turing today
3.99 UW 4.6 W SAT 1570 (790M, 780 EWR) 6 Science Olympiad medals (only joined this year so that is from 3 competitions), VP of H4H club, Founder and President of FBLA club, Ntl Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Texas in state auto admit.
Today was the go_Turing information session for admitted students for 2018. Hopefully the stats posted below will help future incoming students and those rejected to not despair.
Average SAT/ACT: 1560/35 with perfect Math scores in the Math section. Average Rank - 6. No of kids admitted were approximately 129 out of 930 (13.87%); Average graduation rate for Turing Scholars at the end of 4 years is only 40%. Turing scholars who maintain a minimum GPA can apply for the 5 year integrated masters program.
@thisisus2018 - Can you please clarify this statement - “Average graduation rate for Turing Scholars at the end of 4 years is only 40%.” - My understanding is that since Turing requires a thesis for graduation many Turing scholars don’t actually graduate as a Turing scholar because they don’t want to do this last step - so what this really means is that the students who were in the Turing program graduate as regular CS students but only 40% graduate as Turing scholars . Am i right ? Thanks
