I have heard that UT Dallas has some very generous scholarships for NMF’s, but the numbers I have seen aren’t current, neither my computer or phone can open the official page and I can’t find an email to contact the school about it. Could anyone provide me with the official information about the scholarships or a way to contact the school?

Through the National Merit Scholars Program, the university is financially committed to recruiting from the top academic applicants in the country. Beginning in the Fall 2016 semester, incoming National Merit Scholars will receive complete coverage of UT Dallas tuition and mandatory fees for eight semesters, a $4,000 per semester cash stipend to defray the costs of books, supplies, and other expenses, a $1,500 per semester housing stipend for students living on campus, and a one-time award of up to $6,000 for an international study abroad program after completion of two academic years in residence. The total estimated value over four academic years is $100,000 for in-state students and $178,000 for out-of-state students
Using the the numbers currently on their website
Tuition in-state $12,162 out of state $ 33,654
R&B$10,668
Books and materials $1,200
National Merit is Full Tuition plus $4000 a semester cash stipend,
plus $1500 on campus housing allowance per semester
Tuition $0 (in or out of state) + RB + Books =$11,868 - $11,000 = $868 out of pocket per year for National Merit
not including the $6K for study abroad, this is figuring new books and no other outside scholarships. I’m thinking if you rent or buy used books you can bring the OOP expense down to under $500 a year or lower.
This does not include travel and personal expenses.
BTW this is a MUCH better deal than OU or Alabama, you need to look at the majors offered and “fit” I have a NMF at OU currently because of major and fit but am hopeful that DS18 will be NMF too but it looks like UTD will be a much better fit for him.
3scoutsmom - wow, that really sounds perfect. I have been comparing OC, UA, and UTD for their NMF scholarships, and they all seem fantastic. I will probably choose between the three based on fit, could you please elaborate on the atmosphere of each so I can get a better feel for the schools? I will tour before deciding, I just want to know your thoughts. Thanks!
Do mean OU instead of OC? If not I’m not familiar with OC. Your best bet is to visit each school OU and UTD are just about as different as you can get. My DD loves OU, the buildings and gardens and the programs they offer are perfect for her. My DS could not get off the OU campus fast enough! Hated the big football school feel but loved UTD’s modern buildings and very nice dorms, was thrilled that they don’t have a football team and offer programs he’s interested in.
If you are looking for a true full ride National Merit scholarship that pays for everything including stipends for travel and personal expenses you might want to look at Texas Tech.
3scoutsmom, I found this old thread because my son has recently been considering UTD. What program was you son interested in at UTD? Is your son at UTD now or thinking about it for the future?
@Datahead my son is still a junior in high school but plans on attending UTD. He wants to major in Comp Sci.
@GTAustin currently has a D at UTD and may be able help answer your questions.
Thanks, 3scoutmom. @GTAustin, would love to hear any thoughts your daughter has about UTD. Thanks! We haven’t visited yet and wanted to get a feel for it from someone who has been there vs their websites/ phone calls with them.
@delilahxc Please post Review after your visit to UTD
@3scoutsmom New Dorms look great, there!
