UT@Dallas vs. Boston University

I have got admission into both UTD and BU with scholarship. After scholarship UTD cost me 10k and BU will cost me 35k. I want to do medicine or will pursue graduate degree. Personally I feel Boston will give better opportunites, since it has lot of medical institutions to do voluntary work etc. But I am wondering is it worth to spend 25k more every year, which will be 100K on four years. I don’t have any preference for either city. Please give your thoughts and advice.

I think that if money is really an issue then you should go to Dallas. But at the same time, it is easy to receive scholarships and stuff when you are already in the school. I think you should also consider which one you truly want. As long as you feel Ike you didn’t make a mistake you’ll be good

@aweinst Really? “It is easy to receive scholarships and stuff when you are already in the school” That is absolutely NOT true at all.

@Alfred2018 at first I thought your post was stating Boston would cost you $35K more *total. Now I see that is per YEAR. That is a HORRIBLE idea. How are you going to get that money. You will not be allowed to borrow that much. Your parents will have to qualify and co-sign for the loans or take them out in their name as parent loans.

Did you apply anywhere else? Are you in-state for Texas? If you are pre-med you should pick UTD and save the $$.

My parents will pay from their savings. I am OOS for Texas. Yes. I am in pre-med track. Does it make sense to pay 100k more for BU for location.

Since BU has higher ranking, does it help to get into medical school when compared to UTD.
If I didn’t get into medical school and want to go to higher studies, having BU degree any advantage. Employers consider BU degree compared to UTD degree? By the way I want to Health science and got into both schools in same major.

I heard BU’s health science is one of the top ranking program in country.

Name of college and major aren’t even entered into the algorithms that cut applicants. Then your app goes to human eyes and UTD is a well known stem school so it’ll be considered as good as BU for that purpose.
In addition, BU is a bad choice for pre-med due to grade deflation. Pre-meds should choose the best value and most supportive.
Head over the pre-med forum and the experienced posters, including those who interview for med school or help pre-meds professionally, will all tell you UTD.
Have you got other choices?

I got into UMass Amherst @28k and Uconn honors program at 30k, University of Rochester at @40k and UT Austin OOS without any aid.

UTD at $10,000 per year for premed? This is a no-brainer. Go to UTD. Medical school is crazy expensive. You need to come out of undergrad with as little debt as possible. As for reputation, none of your other choices are head and shoulders above UTD, and even if you decide not to go to medical school, UTD’s reputation will get you just as far as any of your other choices.

Have them keep the money in their savings and use it to pay for medical school.

Your grades and activities will help you get into medical school. Go to UTD and embrace it and embrace the low cost. Get super involved even though it’s a bit of a commuter school. Take advantage of the MANY hospitals in the area to do shadowing and volunteer work.

I assume you got AES and CollegiumV at UTD?

What’s your parents’budget?

BU is a better school no doubt about it and boston opens up more opportunities even if you dont go into medical school. Is it $25k that you are paying out of pocket now or loans? Take the loans and enjoy boston - great city and people/opportunities are great

My guess is that the above poster is a young teen and doesn’t know parents can lose their house if they don’t pay back or that students can borrow 5.5k freshman year not 25k. “take the loans and have fun”??!!

Anyway… Your real choices are UTD Honors or UConn Honors. Visit if you can are both are extremely different. The best value is UTD honors but if you want to see snow and have a traditional campus in a D1 college town then UConn delivers.
