My son is likely to attend either UTD or UA via a National Merit Scholarship and I would like to hear from parents who know a lot about both schools and especially if those parents have sent one or more children to each school. I know the school environments are very different but it would be great to get insider information on how they compare. Thanks.
I see that nobody has responded to your query. I do have a daughter that has attended UTD for 4 years on the NM scholarship. We have friends whose kids attended UA on the scholarship. The environment between the 2 schools did make the decision. The reasons my daughter chose UTD were the environmental issues: urban area, diversity, not a sports focus, not a greek focus, not a party focus. UA is the opposite in all of those areas. I do think urban and diversity was the key for my daughter.
Both are good schools that offer many opportunites and great scholarships. The difference in the environment maybe should make the difference.
UTD and UA are both good schools but the environment like GTAustin said is very different. My NMF DD looked at both schools. She ultimately decided she wanted more of a traditional college experience so went to UA. She loved the football games but didn’t ever go Greek or party. She found a like-minded peer group and had the time of her life. She even attended several playoff football games over the years. She has no regrets. If you have any questions, PM me and I’ll be happy to answer them.
I am sure she would have been successful at UTD, but the fit was not there for her.
Thanks @GTAustin and @kroplady
My son applied to both as well and is leaning towards UTD (hasn’t visited Bama yet). @GTAustin - how has your daughter’s experience been at UTD? My son loved everything about our campus tour except the cafeteria. He will study Comp Sci. Thanks!
My daughter’s experience could not have been better. She is graduating with a master’s in four years, has had 2 internships, and has a great job offer when she leaves. She started out in computer science and changed to cognitive science. She has traveled all over the world and this is due to UTD. The friends that she made there have inspired her and have invited her to their homes throughout the world.
She also has immersed herself in the university. She has played sports, been very involved in numerous clubs, has lead tours, been involved with UTD radio, has become a gardener and has learned to take care of herself.
UTD is not the typical school but it allows individuals to explore and find themselves. It is not for everybody but it is a great school! If you have any other questions, please ask.
Thank you @GTAustin … I just read your reply to my son and he was excited. Grateful for this opportunity for him.
