UT essays

So if I only did two of the essays on applytex. for UT will that affect my chances of getting in?? I already got the app in.. Thanks.

So you did the 2 required and left out the optional third (not including the major specific)? I feel like doing the “optional” stuff says that your willing to go the extra mile/do whatever to get in and shows how interested you are. Not doing them doesn’t and to me says that you don’t care as much. Just a personal opinion.

are you in top 10% ? if you are in top 10%, you are automatically accepted and the essays do not affect your chance of getting into the university, only your school for your major. if you arent in top 10%, i would suggest doing them because it would increase your chances of getting in.

The optional essay is an opportunity to explain any additional circumstances that you feel are relevant to your admission and academic history. If you have already addressed those types of issues in your other two essays, the third essay is overkill, and most people don’t have circumstances so extraneous that they would need it in the first place. A redundant optional essay doesn’t say to me that you care any more about getting in than someone who wrote only the two required ones, and it seems to indicate that you are unsure of yourself, your stats, and your writing abilities on the other two essays, not that you are willing to go the extra mile - you should have already done that with your grades, ECs, etc. Seeing as how quite a number of non top 10%-ers and transfers get in without the superfluous essay, it clearly doesn’t make as much of a difference as some people think it does.

If there are circumstances you don’t feel have been covered adequately but should be considered with your app, then do the optional essay, but don’t do it if they have already been addressed. If you have circumstances you’d like considered but they don’t add up to a full essay, per UT you can submit them in a letter:
