UT Fraternities

What are the biggest and best fraternities at UT Austin?

From what I hear, FIJI, Sig Ep, SAE, and KA are all known as "good houses." However, each house really is going to have a group of guys who fit in best there. You may not fit in best at one of the "best" or most prestigious fraternities, or be able to get a bid there. A lot of fraternities (particularly SAE from what I hear) are kind of "old money" houses and have a lot of guys from that social scene.

Of course there are a lot of great guys who figure they'll pledge Omega or they won't pledge at all...

how big are the pikes there?

There reputation is good but not great from what I hear. They are second-tier, but that's not bad.

Of course, you can't really go off of someone else's perception. Just think about when you visit whether you really want to spend $20k to spend 4 years with this particular group of guys. If you don't get a strong "yes" feeling, then it may not be the house for you.

pike is near the bottom, they're mostly randoms. kappa sig, delt, and zbt are all good too.

what do you mean randoms?

mostly guys who didnt know anything about the greek system before coming to school in august. by that time most the big chapters have already given out bids so their options are pretty much pike or nothing at all.

other than those guys, it'd be people who didnt get bids at other places

If you can make it to Austin this weekend, it is Roundup and all of the houses will have big parties. The bigger houses will have parties with live music (some have some pretty big name bands play) Friday night, Saturday all day, and then Saturday night.

This is a major rush event for UT fraternities. It's a good chance to take a look at all the groups and see where you might want to focus on rushing this summer. (They will be looking at you too, so watch yourself ;) don't act like an idiot!!)

yea im actually going up to that on friday afternoon for a few days. how does it work? do you just go to the different houses or do you have to know one of the members to get in?

Some of the houses have "rush lists" that enable you to enter the party (you get wristbands). Do you know some guys who are in fraternities at UT now? If so, they should know some rush captains and they can get you on the lists.

But, if you are walking around with a group of solid kids, and the doormen at the party know that you are rushing, you shouldn't have a problem getting into most parties.

can't make it to roundup. when does rush start? in the fall when everyone gets there?

Fraternity rush at UT doesn't have a "designated" rush week like the sororities do. It really starts this spring and goes through the summer. The big houses will have their pledge classes set by the time classes begin in August.

Over the summer, during the orientations in Austin, there will be rush events at the houses. Get around and meet people then. There will also be events in some of the big citites,

But, I really recommend that if you know guys in houses at UT, you should let them know that you are interested in rushing, so that you will get on rush lists. Then, the rush captains will contact you to let you know when things are happening, whether the events be in Austin or elsewhere in Texas.

westside - there is a really good post by somebody (a current student) in the "greeklife at UT" thread that talks about fraternity rush at Texas. He pretty much says it all.

yea i only know kids at kappa sigma and pikes but wanted to check out a few more. so i should just get with a group and go around?

Yes, it will be obvious that you are a rushee if you are walking around with a bunch of seniors. Try to meet rush captains at the fraternities that you are interested in, and try to meet as many guys as you can. It will help you in the long run.

Ah, that explains why there are so many obnoxious douche bags (and bagettes) walking around West Campus today!

Why does every sorority girl have to talk like a 9 year old girl? Were they all molested?

At least there are no sorority/fraternity types in math/computer science.

I was at Roundup all weekend and honestly I didn't see that at all. All of the girls I met were pretty well-spoken and seemed fairly down to earth. It really broke a lot of the stereotypes I've always had about Greeks.

Roundup showed me that many houses have intellegent and even intellectual members and that it would be a great addition to any college life.

just got back from roundup. it was great! checked out a lot of the houses and liked most of what i saw. there were tons of people out! great weekend
