UT Freshman Housing

Callaway or Hardin House? Also, 10 or 14 meal plan?

I've heard good things about Callaway. I like the fact that it's new. But I've heard Hardin House is good for girls who want to be in a sorority.. I would like to rush but Hardin seems too old for me. Is Callaway good for girls who want to rush? I'm pretty sure I would fit in with the girls at Hardin House, but are the girls at Callaway kind of the same?

I am not sure if you have heard of Scottish Rite Dorm? Its the exact same as Hardin House and you don’t have to have your name on the waiting list since birth hahah

Yeah I’ve heard of SRD! Someone who’s at UT now said that it’s much more strict than Hardin is! What do you think of all of those?

Im a senior from an Austin TX high school that feeds many students into UT/Sororities. I am on the list at both Hardin House and SRD. I would say that the only difference in the two is that for SRD you need a Masonic sponsorship. Calloway house is coed and houses many boys that go through fraternity rush. Calloway has many Alpha Phis and Delta Gammas from what i know? In my opinion Hardin House> SRD> Calloway. If you want to live in any of these, id send in an application right away because first come first serve. And if you have any recruitment questions feel free to message me. I know a ton about the process–especially for UT

By recruitment questions you mean sororities right? If I don’t have any legacies do I even have a chance??

Callaway just seems cool because it’s new!! Do you know if it’s really popular after this year?? I’ve heard really good things about Callaway… Also, I’ve heard SRD is really strict. Is that true?

@Yasminamo I would try to personally message @collegeshopping. She has been very helpful with giving information about SRD in past posts.

My D lived in SRD her freshman year and was a Tri-Delt and served as a rush captain (now an alumnae). Many(if not the majority) of the girls who rush live in SRD or Hardin House. It’s simply a matter of preference between the two. My D chose SRD simply because she preferred the overall condition of the dormitory and liked the tradition there. It does require a Masonic sponsorship, but I believe you can contact them to help you find a sponsor (in years past, it had to be a family member). Based on the experiences of my D and her friends (many of whom were at Hardin House), you would likely enjoy either place and not find one stricter than the other. If you do rush, just know that you are most likely to get bids from the sororities that really will be the best fit for you. Best wishes for a great freshman year!

Don’t worry about the storied waiting lists at SRD and Hardin House. My daughter was offered space at both and didn’t apply to them until the summer before her senior year. Also, she stayed in Hardin House for orientation and enjoyed the experience. The staff at both places were friendly, helpful, and seemed to be familiar with all the girls.

I lived in SRD all four years and loved it. That was long ago, but I visited recently and it’s even nicer now. I wish we lived in-state so that my daughter had a better chance of getting into UT and living at SRD!

Thank you all so much! I’m not that interested in SRD because of how strict it is… More interested in Hardin and Callaway.
