Ut Loosing to Ohio thoughts!!

I thought UT was going to WIN tonight but I guess I was wrong.. Anyone have thoughts on the game??? Do you think that Colt will be a better QB then Vince Young?? I honestly do not think he will be..

You know nothing of football at all if you thought Texas would win. Young carried Texas last year and they also lost some key players on defense.

I'm sad but not real sad. The better team won but we'll get better, although I doubt we'll repeat as national champions. Our best corner was out and the quarterback is a red-shirt freshman. The running game is good but passing is suspect. The defense was tired in the second half (not surprisingly since they were out there all night) but they also broke down several times and let OSU make plays they shouldn't have. Still, the Horns have a good defensive coordinator in Chizik who had to make a big adjustment after losing Tyrell Brown just days before the game. Brown will probably be back next week, hopefully with a renewed commitment and work ethic, and his back-ups are learning. Undoubtedly their learning curve increased enormously tonight. We also may have had a little bit of "We're No. 1-itis" and, if so, that's gone.

I've seen young QBs that ended up being good quarterbacks who played poorly in their first games, and Colt played adequately if not spectacularly. He has good fundamentals (his dad's a coach) and he doesn't panic. His arm strength is questionable but I think he'll do fine with time. He's no Vince but Vince didn't really have good fundamentals. He made up for that with fantastic effort and a will to win, strength of character, and an intense work ethic. He learned to read defenses well but he wasn't that good at first. Vince is a leader and leaders don't come along very often.

I doubt Colt will be better than Vince because he doesn't have the physical size or arm strength. Jevan Sneed might be someday. Overall, though, the great QBs have an intelligence for the game that isn't quantifiable or predictable. Who would have picked Joe Montana as one of the greatest QBs of all time? We'll have to wait and see how Colt and Jevan turn out. It should be a fun year even if it isn't a championship year, and that's still possible if this team works hard enough.

Hysteria,

If you truly believe that Young carried Texas last year, I don't think you know much about last year's team. Vince Young is a great player but even one great player can't win alone.

Ohio State was the better team on this night. I agree with most of DRJ4's sentiments except I don't believe that Snead has a shot at one day being better than Young. Colt and Snead may turn out to be very good, maybe even NFL caliber Quarterbacks but they still don't compare to Vince. He's a once in a generation Quarterback. Texas and College Football in general, will not see a dual threat Quarterback as talented as Young was develop for several years.

Dan,

Vince is a remarkable person and football player. (Because of Vince, I'm looking forward to many exciting years of Tennessee Titans football.) I also agree that Texas probably won't see another QB that will have the impact that Vince did but I think that Jevan has similar skills and a better passing motion.

Football is still King in Texas and the Longhorns have a roster full of good players. They don't have to have a superman like Vince to be competitive ... a little luck and a well-rounded, experienced QB should be enough to keep Texas in the top 10 for the BCS. If not this year, then hopefully next year or the next.

Couches and mattresses were set on fire outside houses in Ohio State University student neighborhoods and three people were struck by a car following the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes' 24-7 win over No. 2 Texas.

There were 35 to 40 fires set in student neighborhoods Saturday night, said Columbus police Sgt. David Howson, whose department arrested about 17 people, five of them on arson charges. A trash bin also was set ablaze, burning two nearby cars, he said.

"This happens on big games, so we were prepared for it,'' Howson said.

m1817,

I understand that they also did this last year when Texas played Ohio State at the Shoe, and it was rumored this is a regular occurrence. We knew several people that went to the game and were amazed at the reception they received. Older Buckeye fans were friendly and courteous but that wasn't true of some younger Buckeyes. Many UT fans we knew were pushed and shoved and some were even hit with bottles as they left the stadium and walked to their cars. The police told them that was routine, just ignore it and move on. There were similar reports like this: http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/longhorns/entries/2005/09/12/buckeye_fans_take_a_beating.html.

The Austin police made extra efforts to prepare for the Buckeyes this year: http://media.www.dailytexanonline.com/media/storage/paper410/news/2006/09/08/TopStories/Police.Prepare.For.Osu.Invasion-2263109.shtml?sourcedomain=www.dailytexanonline.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com and I think the Ohio State game was one of the reasons UT moved forward with the Texas Proud campaign to encourage good sportsmanship by the fans. The goal was to make sure Ohio State fans were treated well in Austin given the experiences of UT fans last year at Columbus. I hope UT's fans made us proud both before and after the game.

Maybe that explains why there are more astronauts from Ohio than any other state.

There is something about Ohio that makes people want to leave this planet.

Zing ......

Texas killed themselves. The 2 turnovers were careless mistakes and huge momentum killers. Our secondary gave huge cushions and was horrible. With no real team leader, lack of motivation in the 2nd half was blatantly present. Not to mention Texas was playing at home.

You could say the same about Michigan in the 2005 Rose Bowl and USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl.

If the breaks had gone against UT in those last minute wins, the orangebloods would be calling for Mack Brown's head instead of wearing their National Championship shirts and caps nine months after they went out of style.

Because the breaks went UT's way in those two games, Mack Brown has a job for life - or at least until UT loses to Oklahoma or A&M.

Gstein - you mailed the keywords for this game. I hope our receivers realize they need to hang onto the ball. I also regret that the defense played so far off the ball, especially late in the game. Losing Tyrell Brown put the big hurt on the secondary but you can't win a big game by playing prevent all day.

m1817 - I agree that Mack is a quasi-coach for life. Not everyone would agree with me but I can handle an Aggie loss or two. I would have a hard time if we start losing to OU again. I also agree that breaks matter but I think some teams come close to making their own breaks. Either way, UT led a charmed life from the 2005 Michigan-UT Rose Bowl through the 2006 USC-UT Rose Bowl game. I for one hope we play Michigan again. UMich and Nebraska have some of the best fans in football.

colt mccoy is reminding me of the simms days already...

DRJ4, let's hope that you get to see the Nebraska fans twice (once during regular season and once at the Big XII title game) and the Michigan fans once (at the Fiesta bowl for the National Championship game) this season.

m1817,

Two thumbs up for that and FWIW I'll be cheering for the Wolverines this year against everyone but UT.

m1817,

Somewhere I got the impression you are a Michigan grad. If so, congratulations and reat game against Notre Dame today.

DRJ4,

Thank you. Yes I am. BSE and MBA. It's great to be a Meechigan Wolverine.

University of Michigan, founded 1817.

m1817,

Another great week for the Wolverines. Congratulations and keep it up. I'd like to see UMich in the national championship game in January (hopefully against the Horns, although it will take a lot of luck for UT to make it).

DRJ4,

A UT-Meechigan match up in the Fiesta Bowl certainly be the latest game of the century.

UT has come together as a team and Colt McCoy is gaining valuable game experience. The win against OU should give UT the confidence to help them can run the table. If UT was to play Ohio State at this point in the season, it would be a completely different game.

BTW, did you see Mac Brown in Friday Night Lights? He was a riot. He probably got a big kick out of playing a football booster who is in the ear of a football coach.
