Does anyone have advice for someone from Community college to transfer to UT? I have a 4.0 right now, and I want to get into the business school. Anyone in my position who successfully got into UT? If so, can you message me? Especially if you're also in the MPA program? What about the Liberal arts school (as a second choice)? GPA?

…bump…

Have you finished the Indicator courses yet? You need those completed to be considered. If you have, with that 4.0 I don’t see how you can’t get in. Just apply early. Also, how many hours do you have right now?

Xcellerator, I have 2 done now (Econ and Calc 1) but they said that as long as I finish Calc and Econ 2 in my next semester (and send it to them) i’ll be fine. I applied with 47 (26 were credit by examination while 21 were all A’s that I took at my current college - I plan on getting my associates by the end of June). The deadline is March 1, and I applied in…mid December - was that early enough? Are you in business/MPA program? Should I take honors classes next term, or not bother? Any other advice?

You should be good then. Though I think they’ll need your final transript from Spring to admit you. No, I’m not in McCombs, but I’ve thought about it. Don’t know if you can take honors classes (don’t really see a need for it). As long as you have a 4.0 and finished the indicator courses, then you’ll get in for sure.

Oh, would honors not do anything? I hear its supposed to help give an edge, but it UT doesn’t really care…

Regardless, THANKS for that dude, I just really wanted to hear that. Hopefully (if I get in and assuming you’re at UT) I can thank you in person haha

…bump…

Sure, it’ll be good on your resume/transcript. Do it if you think it’s worth it.

I’ll still be at UT next year (currently a junior technically/2nd year).

If taking honors courses could screw up your perfect GPA, then don’t. (only you can answer to that). As far as courses go, you most probably won’t hear until you send the transcripts for the second semester which have your econ and calc in it. If you haven’t yet sent a letter of recommendation, do that. As long as you keep up that GPA and make an A in those two courses that you haven’t yet completed, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be a good candidate.

Yeah I sent in 2, from my accounting and history teachers. I think they’re decent. Nxt, i saw you transferred to McCombs, how was the transition (socially and class difficulty) to UT? I’ve heard som horror stories of transfers flunking and ending up being a loner - neither of which I would prefer haha.

Socially…Great! Although I had to room with 3 strangers, I ended up becoming best UT friends with two and rented an apt. with them and another this year. I learned to wake up by myself, cook somewhat, & just have more control over yourself. You make friends & some drunk friends & that is only if you get out and meet people. No one is gonna serve you entertainment. I am not going to spoil the rest.

Academically - Yes & No. Trust me, there are AP courses that I took in HS which were way worse than some of the lower level business courses at McCombs, but there are some really hard courses at McCombs too. The basic courses at McCombs like BA 101, speech, are simple. BA 324 is just time consuming but nothing that your brain can’t handle. Same thing with Statistic 309, marketing, etc…if you got into McCombs, you should get through those courses. The hard stuff comes when you start memorizing in business law or intermediate accounting and upper division core stuff. That’s real flunkable material. The sense of difficulty is more of a feeling of feeling dumb and stupid because you are at such a great school with bright and competitive students. If you put me in a room with people smarter than me, I would not be operating at my normal level of intelligence. Learn to get over it and you’ll do just fine.

Things that could potentially kill your GPA at McCombs:

Not going to class OR going to class and not taking notes/listening

Thinking its easy & underestimating the material

Thinking you’ve gotten in, so NOW is the time to take a break and just relax a little.

Partying any weekday or on Sunday night.

NOT keeping up with the material (ex: not reading assigned chapters every night)

All nighters DO work but not without panic attacks & suffering from headaches.

Doing Drugs…that includes smoking w…-e–.e…ddd

Engaging in a serious conflict with your team members…team evaluations!

Think twice before joining a FRATERNITY…not talking about a business one here.

Some of these things did shot down my GPA at first, but I am pulling through doing better every semester since, by learning from my mistakes. Try to learn without making those mistakes.
