UT or A&M Computer Science chances

Hi i’m a junior in high school and I am wondering what my chances are at getting into UT Austin’s computer science program. I do know this program is difficult to get into, but I do have a passion for the subject and would still love to apply. My stats are not yet complete but these are stats that I already obtain and some that I hope to in the future (not giving myself any wiggle room and trying to be as accurate as possible).

  • rank: 60/1007
  • Gpa: 4.5 weighted
  • SAT: 1300
  • In state resident
  • race: Asian American
  • classes for senior year: AP Calculus AB, AP Chem, AP comp sci principals, Choir, Dual Credit Gov/ Econ, Ap english 4

EC’s:

  • choir (4 years, heavily involved in UIL program and at regional level and national level)
  • part time job (2 years, spent some of my weekends and lots of my summer)
  • computer science mentorship (6-month experience, studied with the computer programmer for my school district, presented final project to the school board and city council)
  • photography (hobby and business) (5 years)
  • volunteering (100+ hours)
  • key club (2 years) (president)
  • Student Council (4 years) (VP 1 year)
  • Church youth group (4 years, volunteered and went on many trips)
  • NHS

I feel like there are some things that I’m missing but just let me know and I will try my best to provide more information.

I would suggest improving SAT or taking ACT to improve your odds.

Do you believe that to be the weakest part of my application? If so, are there any other aspects you think I could improve?

For the SAT it’s easier to improve the math section than the verbal section. I would practice taking the sample SAT tests in the Princeton Review. Study each math question you got wrong. With this you can easily reach 1400.

A competitive applicant will be in the 700+ range math score.

UT will look for your Calculus and Physics readiness. So will A&M.
Getting into either program is not the hard part. Stay in is. A&M has a 55% retention rate to graduation in an engineering major. Many applicants self select out and others are weeded out.

UT Dallas may have direct admit for CompSci. A&M has general engineering for freshman and you have to earn your way to your preferred major through the Apply To A Major process. CompSci is in the engineering school at A&M but UT is College of Natural Sciences.

1300 isn’t a very strong SAT score. Take some test prep and try to get it up. A lot.

Stats look good, except for SAT score. Improve that and you shouldn’t have much trouble getting in.
