UT or Michigan?

I'm stuck trying to decide between UT and Michigan. I'm from Texas, but money isn't a problem, so either tuition is fine. I want to study either psychology or communications and know that both schools offer good programs for each. I have been trying to decide between the schools for weeks and really have no idea which to choose. Suggestions? Please!!

Both great schools. Any more specifics on desired qualities of your univ?

They are both great options, but different environments. Ann Arbor is a college town and the cost of living is a bit high by Michigan standards. Since you are from Texas you know what UT is about good size city along with the full university experience. If you are talking psychology then you Michigan is top 3 or top 5 depending upon what rankings you look at. UT is no slouch either top 15-20. You are looking at a similar differential between their communications programs.

Michigan is a top tier public along with Berkeley, Virginia, UCLA, North Carolina

Texas is in the notch below group along with William and Mary, Wisconsin, Illinois and UC San Diego.

Personally if money is really not an issue, I would head to Michigan.

W&M for undergrad is THE top public in America. Texas is a peer of UCLA and UNC. This really comes down to Austin v AA as to where you want to spend four years. Cold vs warm. Good luck.

“W&M for undergrad is THE top public in America.”

Are you an alum or a current student? I would have to say Berkeley is the top public. W&M isn’t even top 5.

I think swish is more talking about undergrad experience fused with academics… in that case, I would say W and M is top 3 public for the undergrad experience. If solely academics, it would be lower IMHO.

Sure, says the Emory student… W&M and Emory have a lot in common…small, no engineering and boring. Everyone’s got an opinion though.

Between Texas and Michigan, I’d take the cheaper option.

thankss! i can’t tell if i want cold or warm weather. i’ve never lived in the cold so i don’t know if i’d like it or not. do you all know anything about the social scene? how does it compare between umich and ut?

also, i know a lot about austin, but what all does ann arbor have to offer? do concerts come through there? is there any culture? i don’t know much about it…

Pretty good culture and concerts but you can’t compete with Austin in that regard. For it’s size Austin has the best music in the country. UT is a bit more relaxed and lower stressed than UM which is pretty high stress and competitive.

Michigan is outstanding for Psychology. There is plenty of culture to be had in Ann Arbor, and what can’t be hag there goes to Detroit area venues all within an easy hour drive. You want culture? Check out www.ums.org

Austin has a population of 800,000, making it as large as DC, San Francisco or Boston. It has the feel of a larger city. Austin’s music scene is incredible.

This said, Ann Arbor has as quainter, more intellectual and collegiate feel to it.

Both are great settings for college.

Both are great. As a Texan you will hate the Michigan weather and grayness. Go with UT.

I did UG at UT-Austin, lived in Ann Arbor (aka A2). I feel that the two universities are comparable as far as academics is concerned. The key differentiator is the location/weather.

Ann Arbor is a much smaller town. UM college life is centered around football (so is UT, but you will have more options at UT). Night life at A2 is pretty much bars (if you are over 21). Austin has great live music scene, night clubs, outdoor activities.

Michigan is cold and gloomy most of the academic year. You can get used to the cold, it’s difficult to get used to not seeing sun from 5-6 months out of the year.

I chose UT, but it’s your decision.

^^^Well if you feel the weather is a deciding issue, than I feel academics should be also a deciding issue. Texas is a very good school, but Michigan is indeed superior academically overall.

I think Texas has a bigger edge over Michigan in weather than Michigan does over UT academically.

The extra money for out of state tuition isn’t worth the difference.

^^^I suppose if that is the type of weather you like it would make a difference. To each his own. Others, such as myself, prefer four distinct seasons. Cost wise, the OP indicated that it really didn’t matter. Maybe he/she would like a change of venue?

I never understand people who say money doesn’t matter at all. Is this board filled with Bill Gates and Oprah types?

^^^I have to agree with you there. If money does indeed matter, I’d say go to Texas for sure!

Fiyero, one does not have to be a billionaire to afford the $80,000 difference in cost between Texas in-state and Michigan out-of-state. Many people are sufficiently wealthy to pay the difference without hardship.

As for the weather, Michigan is perfectly fine. I grew up in the UAE (350 days of sunshine annually, 6 months of temperatures over 100 degrees and winter lows that seldom drop below 60 degrees in the major cities. I loved Michigan winters. I suppose its cold winters were a welcomed change for a few years.
