UT or UMD for Journalism

I’m trying to decide whether I should attend the University of Texas or the University of Maryland. I’ve been admitted as a journalism student to both the Moody College of Communication at UT and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at UMD.

I think I would really like UMD’s journalism program but I love UT and Austin and have a bunch of friends going to UT. I’d probably go as far as to say the only thing I like about UMD more than UT is the journalism program – granted that is probably the most important thing.

With all that said I do have a few concerns about studying journalism at UT that hopefully someone can address.

1.) It seems to me that journalism is kind of an afterthought at Moody. Their own website lists the rankings of several of their majors among the top in the country, yet journalism is no where to be found on the list. I keep hearing how great of a communication program and a RTF program they have, but how is their journalism program? Is their curriculum up to date with the changing times of journalism?

2.) I hear about UMD students interning for the Washington Post, USA Today, etc. but where do UT journalism students intern? I’m sure that the internship opportunities available to me will be better at UMD (since it is right out side of DC), but are there good internships at UT for journalism (specifically internships during the school year)?

Thank you to everyone who responds to this post! In the meantime, Hook 'Em Terps!

Also: I’m primarily interested in political journalism, so what internships would be available for me at UT?
