UT or Wustl

Son got accepted at both, OOS. He also got accepted at Santa Clara with merit aid.

For Computer Engineering overall which one would you guys recommend? He is currently deferred from early notification at GT.

what is wustl?

Washington University in St Louis.

pixel, my son also got accepted at both, OOS. He is interested in biomedical engineering. What a tough choice! It looks as if we can get DS in-state tuition beginning the second year, so UT would be a lot more affordable, but Wustl is such a wonderful school! We won’t get any need-based aid there, though.

I don’t know much about either schools’ computer engineering program. But, I do know WUSTL is a very, very good school.

Wash U is a good school, but it’s really expensive and not known for its sciences/engineering. UT-Austin has one of the best EE/ECE program in the nation. The college life is better at UT, IMO.

Tough choice. UT has truly world-class programs in computer engineering and computer science, but WUSTL is definitely a better school overall with a more prestigious brand name. Perhaps one may “fit” your son better–UT has a more active social scene and will offer more opportunities for your son to get involved in research, while WUSTL will probably have higher teaching quality (at least in lower-division classes) with a more intellectual and intimate environment. If your son is really serious about computer engineering or related field, doesn’t mind going to a less prestigious university, and is going to enter the workforce right out of school (as opposed to grad school), I would probably go with UT…

OOS tuition is quite high at UT. One of the most of the public Universities. I am going to estimate that Wash U is about 10k more overall. .

While UT has a great Eng. school, and the social life is better at Austin…I would choose Wash U. There national reputation is fantastic. I think the brand name degree is worth more mileage than UT.
Just my opinion

I agree its going to be a very very difficult choice. Thankfully we are visiting both colleges next week and I am hoping to finally be able to ‘sense the fit’…have heard so much about this one factor.

Son would thrive in a smaller environment thats my gut. He cannot handle too much action, likes his space. Then weather is the only issue with Wustl.

Price wise yes, there will be close to 10-15k difference per year. But, we are ok with that if overall its going to offer him a better opportunity to succeed.

UT is very well known for its Computer Engineering no doubt about that.

Hopefully, I’ll be in the same position as your son when it comes to college choices come April, but considering his interest in computer engineering, I would go with UT because even if he chooses something different, UT for sure has other options available, like business, that are just as great quality.

And yes, among the “college people” WashU is big, but I would not say it’s that much greater of a school (even my sister, who knows a bunch of schools, had never in her life heard of the school while I didn’t until I began my research) when in comes to a name factor. Businesses will know what school will provide better support and teachings to its students for whatever field your son chooses, so I personally won’t and don’t think others should let “prestige” drive your decision.

Hope you all the best!

Easy decision: WUSTL

I’m on the wait list, so that’s one more spot for me. (jk!!)

I know Wash U is prestigious overall, but I think UT is better for a computer engineer. And Austin is so much more pleasant than St. Louis!!!

(Congratulations to your son on the WUSTL admission! Our H.S. sends one or two kids there every year, but several more really top students end up wait listed there. It’s hard to get into.)

Is Engineering a school within UT that gives scholarship money to top students during their undergrad years?

We honestly did not think he would get into either of them given his GPA, but he did have other things going for him and I am glad he took a chance and applied to both UT and WU. Santa Clara had come through in Dec and we were getting used t the idea of him going there!! Plus the scholarship that they have offered.

Now the ball is in his court and I hope he makes the right choice. Even at our school tens of students get waitlisted every year at WU. The counselor is really shocked too.

I am not aware of any engineering scholarship at UT. Struggling with the on-campus housing issue right now. Have paid the 50/- but when do they revert offering choices?

After you accept your admission to UT, you get a housing contract. After your housing contract is on file, you rank your choices for a dorm.

Fun to shock your guidance counselor :)

Ya, I bet!! She told son he is spoiling the Naviance graph!!!

Thanks for the info on the housing ^^

The kids on here who are talking about Jester, Towers etc have decided on UT already?

Congrats on the admissions! I can’t tell you much about the computer engineering programs but I have looked at both of these schools and they do have an entirely different feel which should make your choice easier when you visit. Our impression of UT was that there is lots to do and lots of opportunity but the student has to make it happen. It seems that it could be easy to get lost in the crowd. My son didn’t like the idea of large classes or classes being taught by TA’s. Wustl seemed to have more of a community feel and also much smaller classes and more personal advising. I have heard of UT engineering students getting scholarship money both when admitted and also after admission while in the program. The scholarships upon admission may have been for students in the honors program. A mom of a student who graduated last year told me that scholarships do become available for students in the program and her student was not in the honors program. I hadn’t heard anything specific about computer engineering though. The Austin climate is easier if you don’t mind the heat some times of the year and you aren’t a cold weather person. Last year when S applied to UT we originally accepted admission and initiated the housing contract right after he got accepted. He didn’t end up going to UT and we did get a refund on the housing and admissions deposits, one came automatically and one we had to call and send a letter to request. (I can’t recall which). For what it is worth, when we visited WUSTL we ran into a grad student who did undergrad at UT. He said UT was a lot more fun and suggested my son go there. As for your third choice Santa Clara, I don’t know anything about the school but California weather is hard to beat.

I have to admit, I took great pleasure in telling DS’s freshman honors science teacher about his acceptances to Wash U and Texas (Biomedical Engineering). This teacher had the reputation of being good because he was so tough, but we quickly learned that “tough” does NOT necessarily equal “good.” He was disorganized and just a very frustrating teacher. DS got an 80 in his class! It counted as 1 1/2 credits, too, so it really lowered his GPA. I felt like telling him, “Ha, DS got in despite of your efforts!”

Maine, son had a couple of those every year…somehow these teachers are resentful of the opportunities these kids have nowadays which did not exist when we were growing up. Our HS is getting a new principal and I have heard that some of those nasty teachers are going to leave.

Spectrum, I think my H and his pals are pro UT Austin much more than Wustl. Many of them in the banking circles have not heard of WU. Although I feel that UT would be cheaper and offer many opportunities I am worried about its size and son there, given that he is not competitive and may fall through the cracks.

I just hope and pray that the visit will make it clear for son.

Back from the trip. No clear winner…all the colleges we visited that son got accepted into had great campuses and student vibes. UT felt busy huge, St Louis was cold n windy but still pretty. USC was pretty awesome!

Meanwhile UT has sent an Honors email to son today.

Congrats on the honors program, it is great to have 3 great choices. I’m surprised that your S liked both Wash U and UT. They feel so different. The weather is better at UT and probably better still at USC. Generally Wash U has the best rep but in engineering UT probably has an edge. The things my S saw as negatives about UT are the size of the student body the size of some classes and classes being taught by TA’s. If these are not negatives for your S, UT could be a great choice. I know lots of kids that love it!
Good Luck, it doesn’t sound like he has a bad choice!
