UT Pre-Nursing Major Applicants: Class of 2017

I feel like the nursing school doesn't get a lot of attention (mainly the threads are about business and engineering) and I sometimes feel like I'm the only one trying to get in the nursing major. So I just want to hear from others that have applied or helpful info (like how hard is it to get in); if you've gotten accepted yet, when did you apply, and etc. Just anything you want to say. I'm still awaiting to hear back from ut.

Would like some info on stats/requirements for acceptance in to the Nursing Program at UT-Austin.

Are you asking about getting into pre-nursing? or the upper division sequence?

Hi, I already posted this in another thread but here it goes again.

I’m in the class of 2016 and was accepted straight into the prenursing class from high school. I was not top 9%, so I was very lucky to have gotten in. 2000 SAT top 10.5% lots of ECs with hundreds of volunteer hours and high GPA. At the beginning there were about 110 in my class of prenursing kids (not to be confused with upper division which is a whole different story). Throughout the first year, many people transferred out and in but it’s still stable around 110-120. It’s difficult to transfer in because you have to complete certain prereqs that are only reserved for people currently in the prenursing program like anatomy. Without being classified as a junior and up, it’s pretty difficult to get a chance to even register for that class. I believe current prenursing kids get precedence over transfers with regard to classes. So in conclusion try to be admitted straight form high school because it’s much easier than trying to transfer in. I heard that about 440 people applied from high school -forgot where I heard this number I think it was from an adviser not sure don’t quote me on this, so it was pretty competitive. Don’t be worried though look at this [2012 SAT/ACT Scores | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/profile/scores) as long as you’re qualified, you’ll get in. In my opinion, there’s actually a huge disparity in abilities in the Nursing class. Because you either want to go for advanced nursing for graduate school, or just complete four years for registered nurse which then it doesn’t make sense to go to UT and spend $80,000 to get that bachelors. Anyways, sometime soon, I think in 2015 (it’s already been passed), they’re removing the “prenursing” designation and admitting straight to upper division for a continuous four year course because currently they have an “upper division” which consists of cutting roughly 40%-50% of the prenursing class which doesn’t make sense (60 spots, 10-12 reserved for honors kids in the fall, and all 60 spots open in the spring). So, if you didn’t make it into the fall semester, you’d be effectively wasting $10,000 to derp around for a semester at UT before trying to apply again or transferring to another Nursing program like at A&M.

About FIGS: they last a semester and currently there are 3 figs available. The Nightingales, Life savers, and health nuts. The way the FIG works is that during orientation, they introduce what a first year interest group is. You write down if you’d like to be in a FIG, and they deliberate for about 30 min (i think they already have the prospective kids for each FIG before you even know about it). They judge you mainly on ECs, SAT scores and GPA then they sort you into a FIG. Basically, it’s a small class of 12 or so students who take the same classes at least 3 together for that one semester and you meet once a week to hangout and talk about nursing in general. You are assigned a fig mentor and you can ask him or her questions about upper division, course loads, which classes to take at UT, instructors, ect. Personally, I loved my FIG and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread because you really get to make great friends and meet people of your interests, same intelligence level, and same work ethic. The courses they select for you which are mandatory unless you have AP credits or manage to convince the advisers otherwise (summer school or CLEP), are reserved for you automatically during registrations which is a HUGE BENEFIT. It’s difficult as it is to register as an incoming freshman as you don’t know anyone, what the teachers are like, and most classes are filled because let’s face it freshman are apple bottoms. There are 36ish spots and almost everyone wanted to be in one. There’s talk about adding another FIG because it was so popular maybe they might extend it to a year. Now there’s always downsides to being with the same group of people for a semester or a year. Some people just didn’t get along with everyone or just didn’t take an interest, so really it depends on your FIG.

Tons of ramblings above. Hope it helped let me know if you need more advice or knowledge on the situation.

Thanks keshus, you gave me a wealth of information.
