My son will graduate HS in 2013 and is interested in UT along with a handful of other schools. The website lists several generous scholarships, but the award amounts associated all describe the scholarship as valued "up to" an amount. For example, the Presidential Scholarship states "Award amount: Up to $12,000 per year". Does anyone know if the $12K is a typical award, or do most receive much less with only a select few receiving the max amount? The GPA and SAT criteria also are listed as averages. Any insight as to how close to these averages you have to be? My son has a 3.2 unweighted GPA with 7+ AP courses and most others were honors courses. His SAT was 1370/1600 and 2100/2400. Not sure what type of scholarship that would mean for him (if any). Would love to hear from UT students and parents about the generosity of the UT Scholarship and Merit Aid packages.

My son just got accepted to U of Tampa with the Dean’s Scholarship ($11K/year). It says they look for an unweighted GPA of 3.8 (he has a weighted GPA of 3) and ACT of 26. (His ACT is 32). He had a compelling supplemental essay explaining his low GPA (lost his dad to cancer) and he had a good upward trend in Junior year.

However, since they sent out the acceptance ONE DAY after they got his application, I wonder how much they even looked at that! Seems like the ACT was all that counted, although maybe with a higher GPA he would have gotten the top award.

Tampa isn’t one of his top choices, but at least I know he’ll be going SOMEWHERE next year!! ;)

Good luck!

mavitale: My DS got the Presidential ($14K/year). Also had a 32 ACT. Weighted GPA is 4.0. Also sent very good SAT IIs. We are in the same boat as you; it’s not a top choice, but at least he is going SOMEWHERE next year!

Thanks for the update. My son will submit his application this week. Don’t know if it will be his top choice but it’s nice to hear about the scholarship offers others are receiving.

LINYMOM and mavitale: Based upon your posts I assume UTampa is a safety school for your kids. Just curious - what are their top choices? My son really likes College of Charleston, UNC Asheville, and St Mary’s College of Maryland.

jm2817: My DS’ top choices are Miami, Tulane, Lehigh. Also applied to Maryland and RPI. Will give Johns Hopkins a shot. May also apply to Lafayette. He’s pretty focused on engineering. While Tampa does not offer that, it does have a chemistry/MBA program that is intriguing. It’s a good back-up plan. Especially with the added attraction of sunshine (and a very quick decision!).

Good luck to your son!

My son’s top choices are Tulane and U of Miami. He also applied to Eckerd, Rollins, FL Tech, Stetson, FAU and URI. All except his top choices are safeties for him. Tulane and Miami are target-to-borderline-reach schools for him because his GPA isn’t so hot.

Did you check out Clemson? Great engineering school and more affordable tuition, not to mention the great football, college town and school spirit.
