My son was accepted to UT - Austin for Fall 2010 start. He was accepted into Liberal Arts - Geography department (environmental studies). He's also been accepted into the Liberal Arts Honors program. (he wasn't interested in Plan II)

Does anyone know when they make announcement or notify finalists for Texas Exes Scholarships or Dedman finalists? I doubt he has a chance, but just wanted to know when. I had read earlier that they notify finalists the first week of March via phone call. Then final decisions after interviews in late March.

He'd really like to go to UT, but scholarships is a big part of making it work financially. I did notice yesterday that he was awarded "August Kunz scholarship" yesterday for $2,500. That sounds encouraging and off to a good start.

It's just that UT is sooo slow on announcing scholarships winners. By the time you know you have enough scholarship money to go to UT, you'll be lucky to get a place to stay in the dorms :)

No, he hasn’t put down a housing deposit. Up until this week, we weren’t even sure if UT would be a financial reality. However, with at least one scholarship, UT is now more real possibility.

We will probably put down a housing deposit within the next several weeks. We had been waiting on results from scholarships at Arkansas and Tulane. He got nice scholarships at both, but not the top scholarships. Now it’s down to UT or Utah State. Utah has offered to pay full tuition. His only expense would be room, board, books, and other misc expenses. That offer beats anything UT can offer.

However, he’s a Texas boy that would like to stay in-state and his dad graduated from UT. Now he just has to decide if he is willing to take out big loans to make UT a reality, or graduate relatively debt free from a school with a better environmental program. How can you beat living in the moutains?

He’ll make a decision in the next several weeks, even if he doesn’t hear about other scholarships yet.

I’ll let him know about the housing crunch. I’ve heard horror stories of freshman having no place to stay even though they “reserved” housing.

I checked the CASH System under the UT Student login, under financial aid. If you view history, you can see what awards (scholarships, grants, and loans) that you have been awarded. It wasn’t there earlier in the week, but just showed up on Thursday. Guess they update that system as the scholarships are awarded.

Slightly off topic, but have you or your son been to Utah State? Logan is in a beautiful setting. The mountains seem to zoom straight up out of the town.

Not that my opinions matters, but you sort of asked.

While I do not know how the specific programs compare, I would say the perceived value of a UT education is much better than Utah St. Living in California, you do not think of "Utah St. as a top school. USN&WR lists it as a tier 3 National university. UT is tier 1. While I certainly understand the financial implications of your decision, I would continue to explore your aide options at Texas.
Good Luck and congrats on the choices you have.

eokitty, I highly recommend getting your $50 housing app fee in now, just to get your son on the housing waitlist. The date you get it in for your freshman year will determine priority for sophomore year as well, should he decide to stay in campus housing.

I don’t know anything about his extracurriculars or essays, which are actually the main factors used in selecting the finalists for the Exes (I think they’re calling it 40 Acres Scholars now) and Dedman, so I can’t pass judgement on that regard. I would say that his academic standards appear to be acceptable for them, but that is the case for everyone who is accepted into Plan II and LAH, and only 15 or so will be finalists for the Dedman.

As for notification, in 2008 we were notified during the first week of March, I believe (I’m actually pretty sure it was the 4th), for both the Exes and the Dedman–both gave their notifications the same day. I would not get my hopes up if you haven’t heard back at this point.
