Hey, I just wanted to get some of y’alls input on my situation. I am currently enrolled at UTSA and have differed my admission to UT Austin. After my freshman year i really want to peruse Computer Science. I know that UT Austin is a really great school for CS and i am greatful to have the opportunity to study there. However i also want to be close to my family who will be moving to the DC area. Will moving to Austin alone and studying at UT be worthwhile in the long run and get me more opportunities? Or will attending an accredited university near DC (like GW, VCU, UVA) with my family be okay close-by be better?
Computer sci is a highly selective major at UT Austin. If you were not a direct admit to that major, you won’t be able to study that there.
How does cost compare, and how much can your family afford?
Also, the UT CAP program means that you would transfer to UT Austin as an undeclared student. Getting into the CS major from there will be highly competitive.
Getting into UT Austin is one thing. Getting into their computer science department is a whole different beast to slay. You need to get close to a 4.0 to get into that program. On the other hand, UTSA is a great school where the professors have a real student focused teaching mentality. I know because I went there and I’m a computer professional. If you’re studying computers, where you graduate won’t make much difference anyway. Plus it’s not cutthroat either.
