I have gotten into the ME programs at both UT and GT, but I'm still not sure which school is the best option. I'm thinking that I might switch into Chemical Engineering and possibly pursue a degree in medicine. Georgia Tech has a better overall engineering program, but will cost about twice as much money. Any input would be great. Thanks.

UT>Georgia Tech...

better engineering program, better student life, etc...2:1 guy to girl ratio at georgia tech i heard....

Definitely UT. I'm considering both of those schools as well, and UT offers the better program along with a better student life, and since UT is cheaper for you, why not choose it?

UT for sure. Great academics along with a great social life with Austin.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that GTech has a better Engineering program, but I'd say they are equivalent. I think the major factor here is cost, and UT wins by a landslide. The girl to guy ratio in Engineering is pretty awful, although Chem E isn't too bad compared to EE.

^ are you talking about GT or UT or both?

I faced the same situation, I chose UT over GT. Here's why.

Academics of the two schools are almost on par with each other. If it were MIT vs. UT, I'd say MIT. MIT and CalTech are in a league of their own, but all the other top engineering schools are pretty well clustered together. Plus, if you are really good, Engineering Honors offers way smaller classes for the beginning classes. UT is a better overall school. For example, the business school is highly ranked. So if you are not sure about your major, you have a better option to switch majors. The social life at UT is better than GT. I'm not talking about parties. I'm talking about meeting a more diverse group of people. You'll meet hippies, yuppies, computer nerds, artsy people, etc. Austin has great outdoor activities and live music. The tuition is a lot lower for UT in-state. Not including travel cost if you are going to GT. As much as I liked being in Austin, sometimes I really wanted to go home. It's a nice option to be able to go home every weekend. UT offers shuttle service to Dallas and Houston for dirt cheap. It was like $26 round trip to Houston back in 2006.
