Hey guys, so I’m in a bit of a dilemma. I’ve been accepted to both UT Austin and Saint Louis University, and I want to go on the pre med track. At UT, I also got accepted into the liberal arts honors program. At SLU, I got accepted into the Medical Scholars Program. I’m not sure which one to choose. If I pick UT and somehow establish residency, I know that Texas medical schools favor Texas residents, so I feel like that would give me a better shot. But on the other hand, I know that many of the top high schoolers in the state are automatically admitted, so I fear that that would make it harder to be at the top of the class to have a better chance for medical school. If I pick SLU, I would be admitted to SLU’s medical school if I maintained a certain GPA and other requirements, along with an interview. However, I know that UT is ranked higher than SLU, and SLU’s medical school isn’t bad but it also isn’t the greatest. Granted, I do have the option to applying to other medical schools if I pick SLU, however, that would remove me from the medical scholars program and I would be a regular pre med student. Money wise, it doesn’t make much of a difference. I just don’t know which school would be better and give me a better chance of getting into a prestigious medical school.
We checked out the Medical Scholars Program at SLU, and supposedly they accept about 100 kids a year. Of those 100, only 25 make it to SLU’s med school. You might give them a call to find out the current size of the program and how many kids get placed. Otherwise, UT Austin is probably a better choice unless you wanted a Catholic school.
