which is a better option for instate for Computer Science?
TAMU w/ university honors + engineering honors + L3C
UT w/o honors
I am not sure there’s a single “better” answer. My son is in almost the same position but Computer Engineering rather than CS. For him, the advantages of honors (accepted to University Honors, didn’t apply to Engineering Honors) are weighing pretty heavily. As his mom, I put a premium on the advantages of honors housing which he won’t have at UT. More important than “better” is that neither would be a bad choice. Congrats on having two great options.
they both are fantastic but really depends on your personality , if you like a more community feel then A&M might be better , but if you like city life with many people then UT , check both out
Cool, yeah makes sense!
How much is a suggested amount of CS/programming that an incoming student should know if he/she is coming to UTCS? @mylonghorn
@accepted0018 , from what I’ve heard it ranges , having previous knowledge of it would make it easier but you could come in completely clueless and still be fine if you pick up the concepts well
UT is consistently ranked in the top 10 CS program, A&M is more in the 20-30’s. Also CS at this level is not so concerned with the actual programming, they will teach that and people can just pick up a few languages by reading books. What a CS program in college teaches is the math & algorithm’s behind the programming. What is the best algorithm to use for a task, what are the algorithmic trade-offs you need to consider, what is the most efficient way to structure a program to deal with memory/speed issues, etc. So IMO math is more important (and this is what a counselor told me too).
