UT vs UH

I am stuck between deciding what school is the better choice for me. I have been accepted to both schools as a Biology major on the pre-med track. I am from Houston, but regardless of where I go, I will not be living at home. I have not received any scholarships from UT, but have gotten a $6000/year scholarship from UH. I have asked many people who have been to both and there were split decisions on which school, so I decided to open the discussion up to the public for help. Which school would be more rigorous? Is UT worth the money? Is the school I graduate from going to make getting into specific medical schools harder or is it a fair chance for everyone? Any info helps! Thanks

My understanding is the most important things required to get into med school are your MCAT score and your GPA. I would also think that doing some research and getting the references from that would help. The students I have known that have gone to med school did not go to the same school for undergraduate work. TTU went to UT Galveston, Pitt went to UT Galveston (she was in state, OOS at Pitt), A&M to UT Galveston, Pitt to UI, Trinity to UT Galveston, Vanderbilt to UT Houston. Again, none went to an affiliated medical school. I truly do not think it matters where you get you undergrad as long as it is a reputable university which UT and UH are. You might look at the advising for prem

Is this $6K each year a big deal for you/your family’s finances? Do well a UT and maybe get a small scholarship?

U of H, while improved recently, is more of a commuter school (and have you compared residence hall life between the two schools?). Is there an aspect of the college experience that is important to you, but UH doesn’t provide or falls short? You are a young undergrad only once in your life.

UT has on average, higher stats students than U of H. So, if you choose UH, then be in the top.

All that said, as I tell my children that want professional or graduate school, undergrad is a step in the process, and one that should have great experiences, but you need to maximize academics to get into the next step.

Are you in the Honors college at U Houston?
Have you taken any from AP Bio, AP chem, AP English, AP calc?
Have you shadowed a physician, are in an EMT training course, got a CNA?
What are your stats?
