UT vs UTD Neuroscience

So I’m debating between going to University of Texas or University of Texas Dallas. I’ve been accepted to UT but did not get into my neuroscience major while for UTD I did. I initially wanted to pursue an education at UT but after finding out I did not get my initial major I’m conflicted on what to do.

Should I pursue neuroscience at UTD or go to UT as undeclared/psychology (BS) major and during my second year apply for an internal transfer to the College of Natural Sciences for neuroscience and why? Is it quite difficult to be approved for an internal transfer at UT?

I know Austin is quite a lively place so I was wondering does UTD have anything outside of campus activities to offer? I’ve visited both campuses and love them equally but both vary on the activities to do for outside campus life for as far as I’ve seen.

UT Dallas is a very nice school. One of my kids started off as a neuroscience major and switched to speech pathology her first semester after trying out a speech pathology class. UTD has very nice scholarships, while UT is very stingy with scholarship money.

The classes at UT Austin tend to be pretty huge, while the class sizes at UT Dallas are generally much smaller. You can go to course lookup at UT Dallas and see the cap size on the classes.

Do you have a scholarship offer from UTD? If so and if it is large enough to make your costs at UTD significantly lower than UT-Austin, then you might want to give UTD a try. If not, the higher expense of UTD combined with its much lower prestige and minimal student life favors UT-Austin by a wide margin. You could always hedge your bet by applying as a transfer student to UTD in neuroscience at the same time you file for internal transfer at UT-Austin in the event that it doesn’t work out. Transferring into UTD from UT-Austin will be a much easier task than the reverse.
