UTA transfer advice

Hello,

I'm interested in transferring to UTA from a community college. I moved to Texas in August of 2011, so I will be considered a resident shortly. After this fall, I should have at least 30 credit hours to transfer. I plan to go into the pre-nursing program and finish pre-reqs. Since this is sooner than I had planned to transfer, I'd like to work some things out.

My main concern are extra-curriculars. I know UTA says to include anything from the last five years. In high school, I only volunteered at a local animal shelter over the course of a couple years and did an elderly work program one summer. Since graduating high school, I worked at a private assisted living home for 3 months. I plan to do some volunteering at a hospital soon as well. Do I need proof of these activities? Do these sound horrible? As I had stated, this is sooner than I had planned so is UTA big on extras?

Transfer admission depends largely on your GPA, the best thing you can do for yourself is work to make that as high as possible. The next major factor for consideration are your essays and resume. Specifically for the resume, the school looks to see if you are a good fit for your presumed major. That will be where you list your extracurriculars, volunteer work, etc. Volunteer experience at a hospital and your assisted living position will be good additions in that right.

In short: as a transfer extras aren’t a huge deal (GPA is), but their absence would be detrimental to an application. In your case, I wouldn’t worry too much. You sound like you’re on the right track.

Thank you! I was worrying so much over it.
