Some on the other threads have said they would like a place to chat about Utah musical theatre. i am attempting to make this thread.
I have a sophomore at the U and she is having a great experience. Best wishes to everyone making decisions now.
@JuliaVail what does your D like best about the program? Any dislikes?
We are visiting Utah on April 23rd, which is quite late but the only day we could make it work. Coming from NY, one of our issues is the distance, but since it’s a direct flight with an easy trip to campus from SLC airport we figured the distance should not preclude us from giving it a good look!
My daughter did a walk-in at Chicago Unifieds after hearing a lot of buzz surrounding the program.
We liked David Schmidt and Shalee a lot and would be really interested to know what some existing families feel about the program… training, campus life, performance opportunities, vibe within the department, etc.
Thanks to anyone willing to share there experience, I’m sure I speak for all of us considering this program when I say we really appreciate it.
David and Shalee are great! David is with the students a lot the first two years and they all seem to love him and what he teaches.
My daughter’s roommate is from outside of NYC and it seems to be working well. Her parents love coming to visit SLC and Utah. There are many students from all over the country. I could put you in touch with them if you want.
My daughter loves the training in all three areas. She came to the U as a dancer first and has felt she has really grown in her singing and acting. She loves the performing opportunities she has gotten including a part in a local community theater this winter, the equity theater on campus this spring, a school show in the fall and performing at a local amusement park last summer and this summer to get residency.
We as parents are thrilled that she could get residency rather easily by staying the summer after freshman year. Tuition is very reasonable and all her friends were also staying so it was fun.
Lastly, it’s a beautiful campus and city and she gets a big campus experience with the small feel of the MTP.
I can answer more questions. Let me know!
Visiting April 17th!
@NoMTinMD @El-Cee did you guys get extensions on your acceptance date? I thought the offer had to be accepted by April 15?
yes, we wrote to David explaining the circumstances. He was understanding and granted the extension.
We also wrote to David, my daughters Spring Musical ends the 15th, so that was the earliest we could visit. He was very understanfding and helpful.
Is there a FB page, or group chat for accepted kids? Other schools have something like it!
@DramaRama I don’t know of one, but my D is fine if others contact her on instagram. You can PM me and I’ll give you her info.
I think my daughter is making one for Facebook now. When she has it up, I will post the name on here.
@NoMTinMD just wondering if your daughter set up the group yet?
@El-Cee She did set it up, but I believe before it will be searchable she has to invite someone and have them accept. She only had one person who is a current student to invite. I will have her look at it again when she gets home but it might be late because it is tech rehearsal. I just tried to search for it and couldn’t find it.
@NoMTinMD Hi! Please thank your daughter for setting it up. What is the name of the page?
Thank you!
@dramarama @El-Cee I believe it will be called Utah MT 2023 but it still isn’t searchable. I haven’t seen my D in two days due to practice but I will see her tonight and will make sure it is set up correctly. I will post again when it is good to go.
@DramaRama @El-Cee Ok tell students accepted to Utah MT to search Utah MT 2023 in facebook groups if they would like to be added. The pic is the red U
@NoMTinMD Do you mind (or does your daughter mind) if I post a link to the group in the venting page in case some from there didn’t see that this thread was created? Thanks!
@azmtmom13 Please post it anywhere that will help get accepted students the info!
@JuliaVail Did your daughter apply for any departmental scholarships after her freshman year? Utah is weighing really high for my D right now, but the university-level scholarship offer is really weak compared to what she’s been offered at any of the other schools on her list. Even getting in state after a year, puts total cost of Utah ahead of other programs where she received a ton of merit money. She reached out to David and he said no more funds are available internally but that there are more scholarship opportunities the second year. We’re wondering what experience with this is. Thanks!
