Glad I could find this Utah thread- why isn’t it listed as a MT school in the list? I never knew there was a program there until it was recently suggested to D in a coaching session, and I just noticed a whopping 32 acceptances in the MTCA class of 2018, so something in going on there worth checking out. I wonder how many of those 32 acceptances ending up attending there.
@Back2B4 I think on the venting thread they said it was because the moderators of CC have to see enough activity and then add the school to the big board, but I’m not 100% sure about that. I think the 32 may be students who are attending Utah for MT. Where did you see that data?
@azmtmom13 I saw the Utah data on 2018 Acceptance Numbers on MTCA’s website. My guess is they have 32 students who got accepted there, NOT 32 of their students attending. My thought process is if enough MTCA students applied to Utah to get 32 of them accepted, then it’s got to have something going on worth looking at
Feel free to email me about scholarships at the U. Julia@ecpartners.org
I think that there are no more “spaces” for the moderators to add a school to the pinned list. Schools would have to be removed in order to make room. This came up a few weeks ago when we were discussing either Western CT which has an amazing up & coming program and also Utah which is clearly gaining much traction each year. It was suggested that defunct programs (of which there is at least one) be removed from the school list to free up space but the moderators never commented on whether that would be possible.
My D committed to Utah over the weekend. Good luck to all with their decisions and thanks so much to @JuliaVail and her daughter for answering questions!
@azmtmom13 Congrats thats great! we leave Wednesday morning for our visit.
Congratulations to your daughter @azmtmom13 and good luck on your visit @NoMTinMD!
How exciting to have a commitment @azmtmom13
My daughter’s visit is not until next week… she is anxious as it is her last visit and says she will be picking a college on the 5-hr. plane-ride home! LOL
@El-Cee it was such a relief (especially for my daughter) to make a decision! She was super analytical about it with spreadsheets and comparisons across programmatic aspects that mattered to her. It literally occupied every spare thought. After the decision, she slept for days Hope you have a great visit and best of luck with the decision.
So happy for you @azmtmom13
OMG you guys… I am dealing with a situation right now. So back when my daughter was accepted we had to figure out when we could get out to Utah to visit. Because of her spring musical and us being on the East Coast, the best day turned out to be this week, on Tuesday. My daughter wrote to David, asked to visit on the 23rd and he said that would be great, sent her a schedule and everything and we purchased flights to Salt Lake City.
Fast forward to TONIGHT and David messages my daughter saying “whoops, classes are over but you can still meet me with me.”.
But the whole point was to sit in on classes. She has already met him, and sitting down with him is not going to help her determine if she vibes with the students or feels like the classes are challenging enough for her. This is 11 hours on a plane just to sit down with someone she has already met? What would you guys do? I’m ready to just tell her forget it, Utah is out, b/c I don’t think she could ever choose to go there without meeting the students and faculty. Am I crazy?
We are on the verge of a breakdown right now and I just needed to vent. Thanks for “listening” and any advice.
@El-Cee Even if classes have ended, are the students still there, such as for finals and what not? If they are still on campus, ask the department to line up visits with individuals in the MT program so you can talk to them. Maybe even overnight in a dorm with them and meet their MT cohort.
@El-Cee According to their academic calendar Tuesday is the last day of classes and finals start on Thursday. So I would think even if there aren’t formal MT classes left the students should still be around to meet with/talk to and she should be able to get a vibe of campus with students around? So I agree with @soozievt see if the department can line up a meeting with some students or an overnight in the dorm. Hope things work out! I can completely understand your frustration!
There will still be students there because many stay over the summer. My D has some of their #s. Do you want her to text them tomorrow? She could see if they’d be willing to meet. They were all so sweet when we were there, I’m sured they’d be willing to meet up.
@El-Cee I looked at their calendar and it is finals week. The students may be busy, but they may be wiling to carve some time to sit down and talk. I’d also ask to see if there are possibly any practical finals you could watch. It won’t be like a class, but it would be better than nothing.
Thank you guys for responding… my daughter is waiting to hear back from David as to what she can actually do while on campus on Tuesday. A practical final would be better than nothing! And she would love to meet faculty +/or students but having her fly 11 hours in one day (she can’t miss more than one show rehearsal so she is flying out on a 6:00 am flight & back on a red-eye) may not be worth it if she isn’t going to get enough of a feel for the school to actually commit. Thankfully she has other good options at this point, and truth be told I’d rather her not be 2000 miles away, but there were some great aspects to this program and she was very excited to visit and now we are both just so frustrated.
Come up with a list of questions and do some FaceTime interviews. My D did this for a prospective student.
Also, is Denny Berry around to meet with? She is actually the head of the program and does all of casting and most of the Directing, at least that was what we were told last year. She is also one of the key instructors once she becomes a Junior, I believe.
I’ve always gotten the sense that Denny is like the Wizard of Oz and nobody gets FaceTime with her.
In fact another prospective told me that on her recent visit Denny completely ignored the kids who were there (multiple accepted prospectives) and that really turned her off.
I agree that a program head should want to be an ambassador for the program and meet the families who have traveled to visit the school. In our case it will be 11 hours of flight time and a great expense! To think that Denny would just walk right past us and not interface is just bizarre to me but I guess David is the main point-of-contact for whatever reason.
Just remember a school is more than just the head of it. Check out the other faculty too. And also does she want to be 5 1/2 hours from her home. I can also say many people who attend my child’s program never set foot there until orientation. Good luck with your decision.
