UTAustin VS UVA?? advice please?

got accepted as undergraduate into University of Texas at Austin and University of Virginia.
for academics, I plan to study economics and accounting (or something in the field of business). I like business related things, so I wonder which school has better undergraduate business program.

I also care about the college life, the city around the school, career opportunities, and campus safety. Thanks alot!

Are you a transfer student? Were you accepted into either/both business schools or just the University?

UT mccombs and UVA McIntire are very similar at the undergrad level. Assuming you’ve been accepted to both b-schools, you’ll want to focus more on location. Both are about equal for i-banking and consulting jobs, but UVA will be better if you want NYC.

Austin and Charlottesville are both good college towns, but Austin is more of a city rather than a college town.

hkem123 and OuterSpace thanks a lot for the reply,

hkem123 , I was admitted into the college of arts and science because I want to study economics. But I also like business, and I hope I can concentrate on business in business school in the future.

OuterSpace , Is there something that one school is better than another? For example, one of them may be better in finance? I know Austin has very good accounting education but UVA seems has a higher rank. What do you think?

Thanks :)

UT is supposedly better for accounting, but the job prospects will be virtually indistinguishable between the two schools. The big difference is that most of the recruiting for Texas will be in Texas, while most of the recruiting for Virginia will be on the East Coast.

Make sure you really understand the internal transfer policies for both schools. Since UT Austin does not have a “College of Arts and Sciences” I’m assuming you didn’t get into Darden, and your not in McCombs. McCombs accepts a full freshman class, so transferring in as a junior is difficult, and puts you at somewhat of a disadvantage relative to the students that have been there. Darden on the other hand, accepts a full class of juniors, so you’re on more even footing there as a transfer.

Again that is all assuming you are going to have less than 90 credits after the Spring of 2013. McCombs does not take internal transfers who have more than 90 hours, so you may have to think about that.

Is there a big cost difference between the two for you?

“Supposedly” is hardly the correct term to use. UT-Austin is most definitely better for accounting, as it has been the number one program in all levels of higher education.

Fwiw, the question does not lend to a direct answer as McCombs different schools provide different opportunities to the selected students who are accepted. The same can be said for the regional appeal of a degree. For instance, graduates of UT in Texas are considered tops in the state; the same probably can be said in Virginia.

I do not think that there will be much difference as far as economics. The answer probably will rest on the ability to participate in the curriculum of the business schools.

UT is better for accounting.

Both are equal for finance and economics.

Erin’s Dad , no, the cost of the two schools are almost the same

coin flip.

University of Virginia if cost is the same

It really shouldn’t be a tough decision. It’s whichever one gives you the clearer path to being accepted to the business school.

If you want to work on the east coast, go to UVa. If you want to work in the deep south or west, go to Texas. An alumni network can be helpful.

If you are interested in Accounting, you’ll find a job at a Big Four firm coming out of either school. I worked in Chicago at a large Big Four firm, and our firm’s HR department loved Accounting grads from the following schools: Illinois, Texas, Virginia, Notre Dame, Southern California, Michigan, Penn, and BYU.

However, personally, I have a higher opinion of UVA. I think it’s a better school overall, while Texas is more of an Accounting factory.
