Hi, y'all! I have recently been admitted to UTD, and I was wondering how long it will take for UTD to tell me if I have been awarded any scholarships!

Also, a question for current UTD students: I live in a city about 20 minutes away from UTD. I absolutely love Dallas, but for the past few months I have been living in Spain, so I feel like being that close to home will not be enjoyable for me. The main reason I am considering UTD is because of the BIG scholarship money they offer! It is a great deal! I obviously don't want to come out of college with debt, but I want the college experience that is right for me. I have also applied to Texas A&M and ASU. I am most likely going to be awarded scholarships at all three colleges, but I will definitely receive the most from UTD. Any advice for me?

Typically UTD will start reviewing Freshman scholarships Oct/Nov. The first wave of award letters will typically go out Nov/Dec. However, every year is slightly different. If you have been admitted and are in the ballpark of the SAT/ACT averages below you should hear something before winter break. If you do not hear anything by winter break, call 972-883-2270 and ask to speak with an admission counselor.

The following are the average SAT/ACT scores for students who were offered an AES award in fall 2012 :

Achievement Average SAT (Critical Reading + Math only): 1330 Average ACT: 30

Distinction Average SAT (Critical Reading + Math only): 1440 Average ACT: 32

Honors Average SAT (Critical Reading + Math only): 1490 Average ACT: 34

UTD, A&M and ASU are very different schools. You stated “I want the college exp that is right for me” - what does that mean to you? How do you picture your college exp?

I applied around the same time last year and was in the first “wave” of reviewed/notified students toward the scholarship offer. I remember getting mine right before Christmas break around December 10th-18th. Last year they said they would notify applicants in november on their website but it got delayed so maybe that will happen this year as well. Just make sure to create your Galaxy page and Zmail. One friend of mine got his scholarship through his Gmail before me which psyched me out but apparently the school didnt send me the offer through Gmail but my Zmail, this was the case for other people as well. They will also send you a letter if you got it a few weeks after the email notification. If you havent been notified by late Jan. you can always call the AES office to see if you were denied or not. They are VERY hard to get a hold of but were helpful with answering my questions once I was able to get a hold of them.

Thank you for all responding!! I will anxiously await to hear about the awards :)

Well, right now I am actually living in Spain and taking a gap year. I love the social life here, but I know that it is sooo different from that of the US.

Basically I want a college that will give me the social aspect and academic aspect. I love learning and I will definitely be applying to the honors colleges of the schools. I know that UTD is a commuter campus, and I am worried that it is missing the “college vibe”. I want to be semi-close to my family who lives in Dallas, but I also don’t want to be able to go home all of the time. I want to be somewhere that has students who love to learn but who also ove to go out and party/be social.

“Basically I want a college that will give me the social aspect and academic aspect”. Does social aspect mean “breaking bad” watching parties, huge house parties, fraternity/sorority life, or any other number of things?

Does academic aspect mean undergrad research, personal relationships with professors, easy classes that help with grad or medical school admissions, or etc…?

Finding the right fit typically requires a lot of personal reflection…

Hahah I love the “Breaking Bad” reference since the season finale was last night…

But, I want to be in a sorority (it’s not a deal breaker though) and experience Greek life. Yes, house parties too. Not something crazy every weekend though. I like to have my party days and stay in and watch movie days too.

Academic- I want professors who give individual attention; I know that this is not necessarily available in huge seminars, but I do know that some schools focus more on undergrad students than grad students. I don’t want easy classes. I’m more concerned with challenging myself rather than having a perfect GPA. Undergrad research would definitely be a plus.

You will be able to find sororities and wonderful professors at all three schools.

Greek life cultural at UT Dallas is extremely different from Greek Life at other schools. Greek life is the minority at UT Dallas, but they do host most of the off campus parties. We are not a traditional party campus. If you are considering Greek life as a part of your decision, do you know the average cost at each school? Academic scholarships will not cover sorority dues.

Questions about FSL (Fraternity Sorority Life) at UT Dallas? Contact Julie, julie.murphy@utdallas.edu

The access to research opportunities is readily available and encouraged at UT Dallas. In the Spring, the Undergraduate Dean hosts an event called Match Day. The Match Day event is open to all students and is designed to facilitate the process of pairing motivated undergraduates with faculty who have research projects. Students who participate will gain valuable research experience that contributes to future success professionally, or in graduate school. Faculty who engage undergraduates in research enhance grant applications by demonstrating mentorship alongside receiving quality researchers.

Gap year - Did you confirm with all three schools you will be eligible for freshman scholarships after your gap year? If not, you may want to contact and confirm. Get confirmation in writing and save forever…

My son is a freshman at UT Dallas who has conducted research already, has enjoyed his rigorous classes and has enjoyed the dormitory experience. Although a large fraction of the student population are commuters, the dormitory experience is quickly improving and expanding. One big reason our family favors UT Dallas is that the culture is focused on academic excellence and preparation for career and beyond. The fact that UT Dallas does not have a football team or on-campus fraternities was a big draw for us. UT Dallas has a strong academic and research history (Texas Instruments) so that influences its culture and trajectory. It is not a party school. UT Dallas chess team is world-class. No football but world-class chess team. That reflects the culture. It’s not for everyone.

Did anybody receive a scholarship letter from UTD ? My D received an invitation to McDermott application but didn’t receive any of letters on AES.

Have you considered University of Alabama? It has everything you are looking for, big merit scholarships, Greek life, honors college, undergraduate research opportunities, professors who give individual attention (especially in the honors classes). There are many OOS students from all over the country and overseas, including Texas. It is not a commuter campus and has a very different vibe from UT Dallas. Deadline for scholarship applications is December 15.

We are still waiting for an AES letter too. At Scholar’s Day they had indicated that those that had already applied and had been accepted would get letters around the week of Thanksgiving. I’m ‘assuming’ they are a little behind in sending them out. I say that because our daughter was a National Merit Semi-Finalist (who put down UTD as first choice), hits the benchmarks for at least the AES Distinction Scholarship, has received letters to apply for both the McDermott Scholarship and to apply for Collegium V, so I can’t see that she wouldn’t be offered at the very least the Achievement Scholarship if nothing else.

@mom21clgbnd, My D has similar situation to your D. But she will not apply to either of McDermott scholar or Collegiem V honors since her goal is UT-PACT. But we still needs the highest AES scholarship. If UT-PACT w/o scholarship, her mind will fly to other college. Please post if you have any news on AES. I will do same. Thanks.

Yes, University of Alabama had an issue with an alum in a sorority who turned down an African American girl. The students in the sorority complained, and Dr. Judy Bonner the President of UA stepped in to make it clear that prejudice was totally unacceptable. There are African American and other minority students enjoying Greek life at UA. The OP mentioned that Greek life was important to him so I posted the link to UA.

Racism is an abhorrent thing but is widespread, even occurring at UT Dallas.
