UTD chance me

How hard is getting into a major in Physics at Utd, with 3.3 weighted gpa and 1270 SAT (Verbal 590, Math 680), 3 Recommendation letters, 102 hours of volunteering at a kids summer camp, working on a thermostat project, started a Physics club at High School, member at a Artificial intelligence club and Computer Science Club, Academic excellence award in Spanish. Applying ED or EA for Fall 2020

My school doesn’t give rank unless you are in top 10%, which I am not

I think you will be accepted. Go ahead and apply and you will know within a couple of weeks. Good luck!

@GTAustin thanks! I am really worried about it. Also what other colleges would you recommend that I would have a good shot at??

You might have a chance at A&M. Your verbal is at the 25th percentile but your math is at the 75th percentile, so your scores would be average for A&M. Not being in the top 10% will hurt you. Any other public university in Texas, you are competitive for admission. You might consider both UT Arlington and Texas Tech. I know they both have good engineering programs, so I would think they have good physics programs.

You have a decent chance of getting in. There’s also UTSA, Texas State, UNT, UT-Arlington, and University of Houston.

Also I just checked my GPA is 3.3 not 3.1… UTD is my first choice.

I really do think you are going to be accepted. Go ahead and apply, you will get your answer quickly so you can stop worrying.

Yea I am gonna apply asap once I am done with this essay  thank you

For some reason there is no Early action or Early decision for UTD and Texas A&M on commonapp and ApplyTexas… Is this gonna effect my chances in a negative way if I apply before Oct 15?? It’s just rolling… I am super worried

No. You want to get the applications done ASAP. For TAMU date of application is a factor and for UTD it’s a factor for scholarship consideration.

How much of a role is my college essay going to play for UTD?

And is having just 5 ap classes bad?

I’m not sure how much of a role the essay is going play in UTD admission. And I would think you will be fine with 5 AP classes. @Sai9999

Oh that’s a relief thank you

Are there any other scholarships other than AES at UTD?

Yes, National Merit, Terry Scholarship, McDermott, departmental scholarships, transfer scholarships…

Here’s what google turned up https://www.utdallas.edu/finaid/scholarships/scholarship-listing/

Unfortunately (or fortunately - depending on how you look at it) UTD attracts a very academically minded student population. And unless there is need based opportunities - the scholarships @3scoutsmom mentioned are probably not offered for the scores you reported. My daughter, with a slightly better academic performance, did not get any offers other than a loan. I think she applied for 11 through the school. And, frankly, I was not surprised.

There is a large group of kids that get AES and other scholarships but they really are academic stars.
UTD in 2018
Middle 50% for SAT
1220-1440

ACT
25-32

While you don’t know how the spread distributes - you can estimate that a middle SAT would be 1330 and ACT 28.5. So about 1/2 of the student body would have scores better than that. And 25% are above 1440 and 32.

Look at it as grades on a test at school. At UTD 1440 and 32 are the equivalent of scoring a 75% on a test. Would you expect to get an academic award for that? No.

But looking at the scores at a school neighboring Texas. SAT 1080-1290 and ACT 23-29. It this case my daughter’s scores were good enough to get her the equivalent of in state tuition (It would have actually been $1,000ish a semester less expensive than UTD).

Oh i see thanks

Honestly I just hope I get in to UTD, physics major ??
