UTD (Finance) v. UT (Economics)

Hello I was wondering which school would put me in a better position for a career in banking or consulting, Economics at UT Austin in the college of liberal arts or studying finance at UTD. I would like to study business at UT but getting into McCombs seems highly unlikely as I would have to internally transfer in. Thank you

I think if you took finance at UTD and did well, you could definitely get a career in banking. It might be more regionally based vs east coast. Read the response from TexTriathlete about UTD and job prospects. Looking at USNWR for graduate level business programs UTD is ranked 33 which is very respectable.

If you really want to do ibanking or consulting, go to UT and try to get into McCombs. Even just econ at UT would be better than finance at UTD. I know 2 people at mckinsey/bain/bcg, and 2 people at legit front office ibanking roles at well known banks. it is not easy at all. these people were some of the best students at utd and turned down ivy league schools to be at utd or had connections. an ordinary finance person at utd would be very unlikely to land those roles. its not easy landing ibanking/consulting jobs from mccombs. near impossible from utd. my brother went to mccombs and is at a great bank in nyc. the recruiting process is tough and brand name schools matter

I agree with @bigreddawgie. I do not know much about McKinsy/Bain/BCG except the one student who did get hired by Bain turned down University of Chicago to go to UT. He majored in Plan II and engineering (I forgot which discipline) and did it in 3 years. He was one of the smartest people I have ever met. I think the competition for jobs at those 3 companies is fierce. I also agree if you want to go to east coast finance/banking, UT is where you need to go, even though I have heard kids from A&M making it as well. If you want to stay in the region - DFW, Houston, Austin, UTD would work.
