Natl M. Finalist Scholarship at UTD
35k scholarship (4.0/NMF) at UofA
Difference in cost between two is negligible with parents.
I think this simply comes down to personal preference of Dallas v. Tucson. Any other differences/thoughts?
I think Tucson and its surroundings has more to offer for the outdoorsy type.
UT-D might be a more serious place. Not that it’s better academically, but if you are looking for the traditional college big school experience with parties, greek life, and SPORTS, that’s Arizona.
I’d go to U of A - but again for preference. This is for this year - right? Because for next year, the AZ scholarship is $32K, not $35K and tuition is up. But if it’s this year you’re ok.
U of A will be a more complete college (sports, etc.) and assuming you are in Honors - the dorm - is unbelievable - really nice with dining hall at the bottom and gym/counseling center adjacenent.
Visit both if you can. Talk with your department faculty and admissions staff. Which school is more responsive? What is honors housing and curriculum like in both? What’s the vibe at both campuses? UTD’s job opportunities will be in the DFW area. Which recruiters go to UofA? What’s the alumni network like at both places?
I live pretty close to UTD. If you haven’t visited the area, be aware that it’s a 25-30 minute drive from downtown Dallas, so it will feel more suburban that the AZ campus that’s integrated into the middle of Tucson. UTD is surrounded by suburban boulevards and neighborhoods built in the 70s/80s, and there’s not that much around that you could walk or bike to off-campus. I’ve heard people say it seems more like a corporate office park than a college campus, which is a little harsh but gives you the idea. UTD does have a very bright and capable student body, and you would definitely get an excellent education there. But if a traditional “college” experience with school spirit and football games etc. matters to you, then I agree with others that Arizona is the better choice.
