UTD vs UMN vs Tulane

Hi everybody,

I am an international student here. I got into some universities and these three are my top choices. So, choosing among these three is really hard. My potential major will be engineering(not sure which specific engineering). I am hoping to go to a university that can help me get a good job or graduate school. If possible, I prefer small class setting.

UTD gives me AES,which is quite alluring because my cost of attendance will be only about 10k$. Besides, I also get admitted to the Collegium V Honors Program. UTD is located near Dallas, a growing and spectacular city. Also, there are a lot of high-tech companies near Richardson. So, I think finding a job is not difficult after graduating from UTD. The only worry I have is that UTD does not have name. I don’t know if this will affect the admission to a “big name” graduate college.

UMN offers me the Gold Global Excellence Scholarship, which covers the difference between Minnesota resident and non-resident tuition rates. My cost of attendence will be about 30k$. UMN is the state flagship with good programs in engineering and business, especially in chemical engineering. But Minnesota is soooo cold. I cannot imagine staying indoors for four months a year.

Tulane gives me 32k scholarship, which brings the cost of attendance down to about 35k. Tulane is ranked the highest in the U.S News ranking but the engineering program there is not so decant.

Money is a matter for me because I do not want my parents to use much of their savings to pay for my college. I am mainly struggling between UTD and UMN, both of which have a great engineering program and are located near/in a big city. But going to UMN means 80k$ more cost in four years. I don’t know whether UMN worths that extra 80k.

I need your opinion, everybody.

Thanks you all.

UTD engineering is very good. Only downside is you won’t really get too much of the college experience as it’s still transitioning from being a commuter school and there isn’t much sports life or Greek life. But if none of that matters too much for you UTD is a no brainer

UTD has 4,000-5,000 students who live on campus. Given your financial situation, I think you should carefully consider UTD. My kids’ high school sends students there every year.

Thank you guys. I don’t care whether there is a lot of sports life or Greek life.
I still need more advice. Come on, guys!

@pitehu If you don’t mind, which school did you choose and why?

Thanks
