Utes or Panthers

I know it is very late, but I have been deliberating all summer and have been second-guessing my college decision. For the better part of the spring and summer, I have been between Middlebury College and the University of Utah. Due to the deadline, I ultimately chose Utah but with much reluctance. I have analyzed every possible facet of the schools, and my logic is in favor of Utah: full scholarship, single room, more interactive environment, the best skiing in the world, etc. and there are a lot of negatives to Middlebury: old dorms, very intense, pre-med committee, etc. And also at Middlebury, I would play football. All of these descriptions would obviously be in favor of Utah, but there is something about Middlebury that I am just so attached to. I am majoring in economics, but ultimately I would like to study medicine. My brain says utah, but my heart says Middlebury. Did I make the right decision?

Interesting…PR just ranked Midd as #15 for “dorms like palaces.” I didn’t see Utah on that list.

And if you don’t want to be challenged with an intense academic experience, why even second guess yourself?

I guess my qualms concern the investment… Is a degree from Middlebury really worth $200,000, when i can get it for free at Utah. Will going to Middlebury really put put me in a better position? And as for the dorms, utah takes the cake. Utah’s dorms were used as the Olympic village dorms for the '02 Games in Salt Lake. Very large rooms, and many single rooms. My father went to Middlebury, and they are the same dorms that he stayed in back in '72. They have not made any renovations to most of the residence halls. They spent their money on superfluous things like heating plants.

Middlebury has built or fully renovated seven new dorms since the early 1990s, along with a new library, science center, two new dining halls (and one renovated this year), a center for humanities and film, a center for the performing arts, a pool, an ice hockey rink, a fitness center, a ski lodge, and a student center. Oh, and they built a new heating plant that uses wood chips (as you so thoughtfully mentioned).

As I’ve said, you’re decision has been made, so it’s time to move on. Enjoy your time at Utah and stop worrying about “what ifs.”
