UTexas Austin and Texas A&M?

Hi, I’m curious about test scores generally needed for UTexas Austin and Texas A&M. I have a friend in Mexico, (but he’s not Hispanic), and he wants to get into UTexas Austin or Texas A&M. I tried to do some research and found out UTexas Austin is clearly a better school. But I also stumbled upon something about top 10% of class, does that apply to US Students only? Also, for those who got in to UTexas Austin not by auto-admission (does that still exist now?), what are some of your scores on the SAT/ACT? My friend mocked a couple and got somewhere between 1800-1950… Any one has any sort of admission experience and stories for UTexas Austin and Texas A&M please share them, I’m trying to help a really good friend for this.

Thanks a lot, and good luck with your respective college searches!

Only for Texas residents.
Texas applicants eligible for automatic admission. Section 51.803 of the Texas Education Code defines the rules that govern automatic admission to Texas universities. Under these rules, the University is required to use automatic admission to fill at least 75 percent of the spaces available to Texas residents in each entering freshman class.

Each September, the University informs school districts of the rank that will be required to earn automatic admission to the University in the next application cycle. On September 15, 2012, the University notified school districts that it will automatically admit students in the top 7 percent of their high school classes to summer/fall 2014 and to spring 2015.

I think he should try to get above 2100+ on the SAT. It’s getting tougher to get into UT austin. His GPA should be 3.75+. If he wants to increase his chances, the subject tests can give to his app more weight. For Texas A&M, At least 1300+ math and reading combined will increase his chances. Good luck to your friend!

I have friends (in state) who have gotten into UT Austin, and for the most part they were well rounded students with high stats and strong essays/letters of rec (I know essays and letters are optional for UT, but do them anyway). UT looks at rank very heavily, at least for in state, so I recommend having a high rank if applying. For Texas A&M, I’ve seen lots of less than stellar students get in by being legacies; for their engineering school, however , only the cream of the crop get in. If your friend wants to do engineering, his composite math and reading SAT score will need to be very competitive (1350 or higher). again, with good recs and letters he should be fine.

I would say you need an even higher than 1350 for engineering. Also although many schools do not consider writing UT Austin does for whatever reason weight writing the same as reading. So in the formula they basically weight math out of say 2 points, and writing and reading out of 1. This stinks for me as I really like UT austin the business school, and I have a good M+CR (1470) but a poor writing (610).

Also from what I understand rank is not of the uptmost importance OOS? I am pretty sure… Anyone know for sure?

Thanks everybody for the replies I have a couple of questions here:

  1. @sahar1811 If my friend is not into engineering but wants to get to Texas A&M, do you have a general idea of the score range?
  2. @SternBusiness Thanks a lot for the information and the importance of writing, I didn’t know that!
  3. @Jr12317 Thanks for the much needed info!

That’s why I told you for Texas A&M get 1300+.

  1. Academic Admits

Applicants qualify for automatic academic admission (but not necessarily to the major of choice), if they:

successfully complete Texas A&M’s required coursework, and
rank in the top quarter of their graduating class on or before the application deadline, and
achieve SAT or ACT test score minimums (including Writing scores), and
combined SAT score of at least 1300 (Math and Critical Reading) with at least a 600 in each of these components, or
composite ACT score of at least 30 with at least a 27 in the Math and English components,

i think auto admits are only for texas residents though ??
something like 5% of TAMU students are non texas residents, so it might be harder for your friend to for admitted students, average combined SAT score for math and reading is a 1220. for all three sections, kids usually have a 1600-1900 ish score. what kind of gpa/rank does your friend have? a 3.6/4.0 or higher and/or being in the top 10% will greatly increase his chances.

Yeah @sahar1811 is right 1220/1600 average. But you want to be above of the average. Don’t look on the average.

@Jr12317 Would you say 1300-1350 is a safe play for non-Texas residence to get into Texas A&M?

Probably, but anything can happen. The better his/her score, the better his/her chances to get in. Also his/her GPA will be a factor on his/her app.

yeah, that should be high enough.
i don’t know if tamu takes essays or letters of rec, but if they do, sending them in would probably help a lot.
they will also look heavily at rank/GPA since so many of their students are auto admitted by rank and test scores.

Some schools don’t take the essays or letter of recommendation. You should look on the app what they want to see.

Texas A&M does not use Legacy in their admissions.

Academic Admit is for all just not Texas residents - out-of-state, home school, non-ranking schools

Essay A&B are required to complete your application. Essay C is optional but is recommended for Review Applicants and Scholarships
