UTK Class of 2015 Applicants :)

Yeah. I’ve heard some decent things about the science departments in general, too. My Biology teacher talked to us about their dendrochronology research when we were going over trees. I’ve heard that the Japanese department is rather good. One of my teachers who attended both UTK and Harvard said that even though UTK isn’t the greatest school, he learned a lot, partly due to having a real interest and going to the library and studying and finding out more. And talked about how he’d sit outside some of the Historical and Cultural lecturers and just listen, even though he didn’t have the class, just because the lecturers were that interesting.

I’m rambling, though. Sorry about that! I like to chat about UTK and find info on it a lot. Hrm, I’ve heard several bad things about their Musical departments. Psychology is popular, but depends on the class at times. I know several people who have taken Educational Psychology and they all despise it.

I received my letter of admission today. I don’t think that the letter/email/something that includes your UTnet ID until later. Of course, that might not be something until December.

finally got my acceptance letter today! so now i have a few questions haha (of course)…when do we find out about financial aid? are we supposed to pay the enrollment deposit/sign up for housing even if we are still waiting to hear from other schools, just to have a spot? and also, when’s a good time to visit? is there going to be an admitted students weekend or anything like that? sorry tons of questions lol. GO VOLS!

Welp, financial aid doesn’t come for a while. I do believe that Institutional Scholarships begin to be announced in December, Competitive Scholarships in January, and you fill out Fafsa in January too. You’ll receive a report on financial aid by April at the latest. I’m betting earlier if you are quick about it. From there, the Enrollment deposit is not due for quite a while. May 1st. However, housing can go quickly at times, so it is often best to try to get that done a bit earlier. The deposit isn’t payable until in December, I think. There is a good amount of time in between finding out and deadlines for you to decide, though. You don’t lose your spot unless you do not put in the deposit by May 1st.

There is a Orientation, if you decide to go to UTK. In June and July, you go to a two-day orientation where you spend the night, get to know the campus, and register for classes. This is a good time to visit, of course, and you are allowed to come early and spend longer staying there, even though there is an extra cost for this. You can really visit any time for a tour, because they are constantly running them. There is no actual tour for people who are admitted(that I know of, anyways) and not sure if they want to go, but you are allowed to attend any tour at any other time.

Hope that helps.

You get your financial aid package sometime after March 1st. It used to be you could go ahead and apply for housing by just applying, now you have to wait until you get admitted. If you have been admitted I would apply ASAP. Provided you are not in the honors program and are required to stay in Morill (which, aside from the new furniture, is actually a ****hole), I would probably put North or South Carrick as my first choice (North is boys, South is girls). IMHO that is the best place to stay as a freshmen. I have been in all of the dorms and can say with confidence north carrick is the cleanest and feels the newest, even though all the dorms are roughly the same age. That being said, Carrick is probably the quietest and least social dorm. If you want to know everyone on your floor, pick Hess, if you can deal with the traditional dorm layout with community baths. Hess is also recently renovated and very nice. I know Hess gets a bad rep but I honestly don’t think it’s THAT bad. Reese is supposed to be just a smaller north carrick, technically this is true but in reality it just isnt as nice, it often has odors and this year arleast has gained the rep as the unofficial party dorm. Humes is a replica of Reese, but i haven’t been in there so I wont make a comment one way or another. Clement is in a category of its on, being across the strip almost off campus. Overall I would steer clear, its old, in bad shape, and just isnt the best place for freshmen to be. It is so far from the others dorms you’re forced to be in an entire community of your own. At clement you have your own dining hall, routes to classes, etc. While the majority of your class in presidential court (North/South Carrick, Reese, Humes, and Morill) are all going to 1-2 dinning halls and taking the same path to campus everyday. Presidential court also has some cross over with Hess considering Hess is between the library and presidential court. Whereas clement has nothing to do with any of these other dorms. The only pros I can see to clement is proximity to classes and the strip, but i cant say the later is really a pro. All I can say about Massey is it has the largest rooms, but I’m pretty neutral on it otherwise.

If you have any more questions hit me up.

Just got accepted today!

After reading this, I checked my account and found out I was accepted! I am wondering though-- how much diversity is at UTK? I’m from Philadelphia, and definitely wouldn’t want to feel out of place!

Hey JKrtist,

I’m from Phoenix, AZ and i really doubt a lot of applicants will be coming from my area here in the Southwest. I’ve heard it isn’t the most diverse campus but you get a few people from everywhere, especially all over the South.

Thanks footballfeldey! I’m accepted to the nursing program, and it was really hard to find one that had a certain admissions process. I was really limited in where i could apply (out of 20 or so schools), and I really hope I like UTK!

Also-- when did people get their admission packets with scholarship information? I just found out I was accepted yesterday-- it occurred to me to check the website! But I don’t know how long the decision has been up!

I don’t think we find out about scholarships until February/March or so…I wish it had just come with our admission information!

Nope, you find out about merit scholarships pretty early! I just got an institutional one a couple of days ago($1000, yay, and since I’m by poverty level, 3K total, yaaay). I’m glad, because with that, the hope scholarship, and the pell grant, I has enough for the estimated costs of tuition and books. Hooray! And as long the TN Pledge scholarship is what I think it is, I should be able to get pretty much all of my fees paid. Of course, I could be wrong. Either way, I can commute if I don’t get the money to live on campus.

Of course, I think that the super high level ones(Chancellor’s, The ones that aren’t institutional) take a longer time. Still, it’s a high likelihood to get them this and next month. Yay~

how can you tell whether or not you have been accepted into university of tennessee?

Your ID allows you to see your admission status screen, and when it says that a decision has been made, it should be there, whether it is “offer acceptance” or anything else. Also, they send you a letter. They are usually quite quick about it, too, even though they might not send out tons of letters over the next couple of weeks.

I was just accepted to UTK and I am wondering what scholarship(s) I would qualify for! Here are my stats:

I thought I’d ask while I’m on here!

Female
OOS ¶
SAT (M/CR)- 580/570-- 1150
SAT (M/CR/W)- 580/570/620-- 1770
GPA (UW from junior year)- 3.45
GPA (W)- 4.2 (i think)
Class Rank- School doesn’t report
15 Honors and 1 AP in high school-- took 2 sciences junior year and two languages (2 years of high school french and 3 years of latin), also a year ahead in math
Great letters of rec!
Major: Nursing
EC’s/awards: JV XC freshman year, head of publicity, fundraising, house manager for 3 plays a year (11 so far), freelance writer for paper, 3 year member of latin club, National French Exam finalist 2 years, National Latin Exam finalist 3 years, National Honors Society member, International Thespian Society member

Hm, well, you have some pretty nice stats. A small thing: UTK takes 14 core classes for the main consideration. Those would be 4 English, 2 Foreign Language, 3 Maths, 2 Science, 2 History, and 1 Performing Arts. This is the simplified version, and they take the highest grades you have in each of these areas. Also, everything is weighted +.5 for honors and +1 for AP and dual credit.

However, UTK does not give a great many scholarships for OOS students. The only one that they give themselves that goes for OOS students is the OOS Excellence Scholarship. This has no requirements, but it generally goes to students with good service records, good GPA, and good test scores. This is $2,500.

However, I may just be out of it today, and could be missing something, but it looks like that’s all on the institutional side of things. It seems you could have a chance of some of the Chancellor’s, but your SAT score might put you out of the running for some of those. Also, those only go to so many student. Some only give out 5 scholarships per for the Chancellor’s ones.

It is unfortunate that UTK is so bad with aid for OOS and middle-class students, since they do give out some great aid depending on circumstances. I’m sure you have a more affordable option that you would enjoy if you don’t attend UTK, though, as I don’t think it will give as many scholarships to you as you actually deserve.

Yes, I agree with silverocean. One of the issues with UT is that, for institutional scholarships at least, relies heavily on ACT scores (and SAT equivalents). I have a friend who is very smart (4.0 unweighted GPA) and a great problem solver, but he is a bad test taker. His ACT score of 24 got him a small institutional scholarship ($3000 over four years), whereas ACT scores of 29-36 get you scholarships of $10,000 over four years. However, we are all in state so I don’t know if it is different out of state.

Congrats on nursing, though, jkrtist! UT has a good nursing program with lots of opportunities for internships and jobs at UT Hospital. I have a friend who wants to major in nursing at UT also.

We got a call last night from a student telling us our son got accepted. He applied around Thanksgiving. He is planning on being a business major. For some reason, we didn’t think we would hear anything until February. He also has been accepted at Auburn and we are waiting on decisions from Clemson and James Madison. He is OOS from the West Coast. We aren’t expecting much in terms of merit scholarships, as his stats are middle of the road. It’s exciting to have choices.

My son was accepted last fall, and was admitted to Chancellor’s honors. He received notification that he was awarded a Volunteer Scholarship for $2,500, but hasn’t received anything else. He called admissions, and they said Chancellor’s scholarship notifications were mailed 1/21. He hasn’t received anything. The lady in admissions either wouldn’t or couldn’t look to see if he was awarded anything and said if he did, he’d get a letter.

He has a 3.9 and a 34 ACT. Am I the only one who finds it odd that Alabama gave him full tuition, and his in-state flagship only tossed $2500 at him? Does anyone have any insight as to whether more money could be in the pipeline and maybe we just haven’t been notified yet?
This is frustrating!

We are in almost identical situation. My son has been wearing Tennessee Orange since he was born. Same stats, top high school, 8 AP classes, many extracurricular activities. Alabama full tutition, but only $2500 from Tennessee. I know, it is almost identical when you throw in Hope and GAMS, but it does seem odd that our Flagship state school doesn’t do more to keep top students in state. My son understood that the Haslam letters have been sent. Have all the Chancellor’s scholarship notifications been sent? I have heard that individual colleges and departments will add money to the table, but I don’t know any specifics.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is GAMS?

The lady I spoke with in the scholarship office indicated all the Chancellor-level scholarship letters were mailed on 1/21. Since we are only 90 miles from Knoxville, I have to assume DS did not get one. Feels like a slap in the face, and a departure from how they’ve awarded in past years. Some of his best friends with similar and even lesser stats are at UT on almost full rides. Sigh…
