I would like request some direction and input in regards to the competitiveness of the UTK nursing program. When would they announce admission into the college of nursing for incoming freshman for the 2021 graduating class (freshman in fall of 2017)? Does this program have a strong history of job placement and admission to graduate programs? Many thanks.
I don’t have a lot of this info, but my DD was accepted right before Thanksgiving for UT’s School of Nursing. We don’t know that much about the program itself expect she was a direct admit into it. We are visiting in about a month. They have Nursing Open Houses starting 2/24! This is my DD’s current 1st choice!
my daughter was admitted to her second choice major which was nutrition. Hoping she can still apply to the College of Nursing during her freshman year and get in. I believe the actual Nursing program begins sophomore year. you can be directly admitted to pre nursing as a freshman, right?
@Hmk0122 did your DD decide if she is going to UT nursing school?
My D applied to UT’s nursing program on 11/1.
My daughter was admitted to UT’s nursing program and is currently a freshman there. Their main nursing classes start mostly in Junior year I believe. If you are not direct admit as a freshman it is very competitive to get in after as their classes are very small and only a handful of slots open up each year. Good Luck to you all!

D visited campus recently and learned a lot about this program. While she loved this campus size, school spirit, sports teams she wasn’t thrilled with the Nursing presentation. While it’s called Direct Entry it didn’t seem like it from the presentation. The first two years the students are taking prerequisites for the program. So nursing students register for general classes along with non-nursing students. Students are NOT guaranteed registration for any of their classes and freshmen are the lowest priority. Nursing specific activities don’t begin until junior year. Provided the student has been able to register for and complete all their prerequisite courses and they’ve maintained an overall 3.2 GPA then their Nursing spot is waiting for them. “It’s the student’s spot to lose.” If not then it’s open to transfer students or students switching majors.
My daughter is finishing up her freshman year in nursing. She meets with the nursing advisor each semester and they make sure she is on track to start nursing classes. She hasn’t had any problems at all getting the classes she needs. It is direct entry because they save your spot as long as you keep the overall GPA. There is rarely more than a few spots open so they make sure the nursing students are taken care of and have the classes they need.
Thanks for the insight @rebpit. That’s a good point about the few spots that do open up. I believe during my D’s visit they said there were only 8 in the last year.
My daughter plans to apply for admission to UTK nursing program starting in Fall 2019. We currently live in Germany with the US Army, and we are not from Tennessee, but we are attracted to the direct admission program. I transferred my gi bill to my daughter, so she has a lot of flexibility on where she can attend. We are leaning toward direct admit nursing programs, so she doesn’t have to reapply. Anyway, does anyone know what the SAT or ACT Range is for acceptance into this program? Thank you,
My daughter was accepted into the direct entry program as an out of state student with a 4.0 gpa and act of 29.
I’m not sure if there is a particular range they have for the program. Although it is a large university they actually do not accept based on numbers alone. They read all essays and look at extracurricular also. That is what we were told during our tour.
My daughter was accepted to UT in early October, but her letter said they were still reviewing her for nursing.
We kept checking and checking the portal, waiting for the “Status Update
An update to your application was last posted ----” to change to a new date.
It remained with the same date. So we waited.
Today, we happened to click to re-read the initial letter, (the original date was still showing) and found out (HURRAY!) she had been accepted to Nursing. The date on the letter still shows the early October date and we have no idea how long the nursing acceptance has been on there.
So, if you are waiting, keep checking the actual letter on the portal, because they might update it without updating the date of the letter.
My kid was accepted to UTK in early November but the letter said they were still reviewing the application for nursing major. Waiting is hard
@rebpit If you don’t mind me asking when did your daughter apply and how long was the turnaround time
@vamom4 I wish that would happen to us we check the portal frequently
Accepted To UTK Nursing!
