hi,

my D was recently accepted into a BS/MD program in which she will be matriculating to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galvestion. however the undergrad school that she will be attending with this program is nothing too great or special. i was hoping for some feedback from you all. my D is certain about her decision to become a physician. if you were in her position, would you take this program? how is UTMB - in terms of medical school and how students end up doing in residency matches. does the medical school have a good reputation?

thanks in advance

My understanding is the top medical schools in Texas are Baylor and UT-Southwestern. Which undergrad would she be going to?

I guess it really depends on how “smart” your daughter is. I’m assuming you’re from Houston based on your username so one great thing is that Galveston is close to Houston. Also what are her goals with respect to specialty? Primary Care or something more competitive?

the undergrad she would be going to is UT-El Paso. she definitely is interested in the more competitive professions (anesthesiology, radiology, cardiovascular are the 3 she’s interested in at the moment) rather than primary care

If those are the fields she’s interested in, it shouldn’t be a problem. UTMB has residencies in all 3 with Cardiology being a fellowship after Internal Medicine, which it also has.

Was she not able to be placed in the other undergrads: Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB), Texas Southern University (TSU), Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), or The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA)? Or it that you’re randomly assigned?

out of all the universities available, UTEP was the one that she liked the most (although i would rather have her stay closer to houston). anyway what’s done is done and she’s already been accepted to the one in El Paso. do UTMB students generally do well in matching to competitive residencies?
