UTSA Academics

I applied to transfer to UTSA last week and I’ve been hearing that the academics aren’t that great. I know that won’t be the case for me because I applied to transfer into the cyber security program and I’m not way too worried about not getting accepted but I’ve been hearing that the overall academics at UTSA is subpar. Is this true? :3

You are transferring to UTSA for a nationally respected program. UTSA in general is close to UT Arlington. Similar average SAT scores, class size, things like that. Neither school has a great 4 year graduation stat. Are people comparing it to UT? If so, they probably are right and wrong. UT does have a bunch of really smart students and well known professors which both would increase the difficulty of the classes. They are also wrong because they just think that because it is “UT” and UTSA would also probably have professors that are more focused on teaching vs research. I guess what I am trying to say is that most people of Texas think all schools besides UT and A&M are subpar. All schools have good professors and bad professors. Use Rate my Professor and pick the good ones.

Again, you are going there for a nationally respected program and have probably taken a lot of the GE courses already as a transfer student. Therefore, I think the level of classes you will be taking will be difficult and you will be very employable when you complete it.

“I guess what I am trying to say is that most people of Texas think all schools besides UT and A&M are subpar.”

This pretty much says it all regarding peoples perception of Texas schools.

And it is a shame since the vast majority of our kids will be attending those schools. By degrading them, we are creating a situation that the only outcome can be disappointment. My DD has friends at UTA, UTPB and she attends UTD. All of these kids are doing great. They are getting a good education, they are having fun, they are getting internships and they will get good jobs when they graduate. These other schools are not easy and do give a good education for a reasonable price. We do our kids a disservice by counting the worth of a school on rankings only.

I think you are right on @GTAustin - something has to give in terms of perception of schools other than TAMU and UT. This state is attracting the kind of businesses other states envy. With that growth comes a highly educated workforce - and their children. There are just too many highly qualified students to fit in the two schools. And the population continues to grow. I think it’s a shame that kids are heading to schools in neighboring states, because their pride is hurt, instead of building up our great state schools.

UTD now had higher average ACT and SAT scores than TAMU. It’s filled with amazing, strong students.

I blame parents in a way. We think of the schools the way they were in the 80s and 90s - and with the growth - that is just not fair. I confess I did not know UTD had an undergraduate program this time last year. I thought they meant UTA.

With my daughter going to school where you have to have above a 4.0 to be in the top 25%, average act 26 and 1217 SAT - I saw the councilors really begin to encourage kids to look at schools other than the “big 2.” It was eye opening for me last year watching a kid who applied to TAMU, UT and UH engineering - not get into any of the programs. It was a HUGE wakeup call to me that I needed to stress reach and safety school options.

Actually UTD’s SAT and ACT scores are only slightly less than UT’s - bragging point for my DD school! Your right, it starts with the parents because many of them are alumni. If they tried to go today, most would not be accepted. I’m doing my best to spread the word about the other schools and the great education you can get there. Luckily, the councilors at our local HS spoke favorably about the other schools and impressed fit over rankings.
