UTSA CAP Program

Bunch of questions for the CAP program at UTSA.
Plan: Finish with a very high GPA, (hopefully 4) and transfer to UT.

Q1: Do I have to take Algebra, can I not take Calculus my first year?

Q2: Best dorm/place?

Q3: About the Honors college: does it make sense to apply to honors even if I'm staying there for one year? What's the deadline?

Q1: It depends on your placement testing. Some students place into Calc, some place into Pre-Cal, some Algebra and some place into lower math courses.

When do I have to take the placement test, Is it hard? Where can I find info about it? Thanks for the reply.

Call your campus, I had to take the accuplacer, wasn’t too difficult until the last section (I placed in precal)

Just wondering: if you took calculus during highschool, and did not qualify for Calculus for UTSA, you’re going to be taking a class that you took during junior ear of HS??? That’s ridiculous…

You usually take the placement test during your orientation. It will be hard if you havent reviewed the material in awhile. I went to the last orientation of the summer and by that time i was trying to remember trig substitutions and formulas that i couldnt. I took pre cal my senior year and was forced to take it again. It sucked and I felt like it was a waste of my time and money so make sure you do well on the placement test.

I stayed at chisolm. It sucked. people were unfriendly and it was always breaking apart. I would stay at laurel or the other villa style place. university oaks is alright but those are the party people and most of them wont be in the CAP program like you.

You can apply to honors if you want but it wont transfer over to ut but it might help you in your transfer to a certain school such as mcccombs.

Shoot. Although I made A in pre-cal my junior year, I don’t remember it that much. Anyway, do you know the latest I can take this placement exam? I’ll get some tuitions during the summer…

One more question: does UTSA run on a +/- GPA system? (ex. is a B a 3.0?, or do they look at B+, B-?)

UTSA actually is starting a +/- grading system next fall. Idk the latest you can take it but I assume pretty late. I took mine just a week or two before classes started. Don’t wait to long though cuz you could miss a spot in the class.

Alright, thanks! I’ll start reviewing right after APs, and then take it mid-summer! Hopefully that year goes by fast!

sheesh, i can’t remember much pre-cal… i was horrible at it, though. i didn’t pay attention in class and my teacher had a “i don’t care if you pass or fail, this is my last year” attitude so i didn’t bother with him. i’m in college algebra now and a lot of it makes sense now, though.

i was reading through the taks/sat exemptions for the placement tests and i didn’t understand fully but i guess i’ll just study pre-cal this summer!

yeah i’ve been to chisholm hall plenty of times since my boyfriend stays there, and… yeah. it’s not the best. the dorms themselves aren’t bad but it’s pretty worn down in the halls and stairways… and that single kitchenette sucks. i only went once, but there was hardly any elbow room, and the people sitting at the table in front of the television were yelling at a football game at the top of their lungs. i was like… really? this isn’t your room, shut your face. AND the door was open so i’m sure the people living near the kitchen heard it. also, my boyfriend has said that there have been several occasions where they had to evacuate the building 'cause of the smoke detector/alarm… because people were trying to cook in their rooms.

i’d like to live in laurel or chaparral village, i’ve never been inside but the descriptions sound nice.

You take your placements exams during orientation. Once you’ve chosen UTSA as your CAP school, you then choose which orientation you want to go to. I took algebra and precal in higschool and I’m retaking it right now 'cause my SAT wasn’t high enough.

One tip on housing, be quick to apply. If you snooze, you lose. This was the case for me… And I will recommend either Chap or Laurel. Chap first because it’s right next to the cafe, but both places are right across the street from each other.

Ditto to Jael; Chap also has the pool and should be a little easier to get into than Laurel because it is a year or two older. Difference: no eating table in the common area at Laurel. You can choose a 2-rm or 4-rm “apt.” D chose 4-rm thinking more likely to get along with one of 3 people than only one. Two people share a bathroom.

Also, D took pre-cal again, was an easy A. That GPA will help at UT. She didn’t have to take placement test because I argued that her dual-credit college algebra course should be the pre-req.

I would definitely suggest reviewing degree plans at UT Austin and contacting a counselor there as well. That’s one thing I regret not doing when I went to UTSA. Make sure you double-check everything with several people. It’s so frustrating to register for classes and then you come to find out that your college algebra credit will only count as an elective after you’ve already taken it and you have to take another math like in the college of liberal arts. However, in the college of natural sciences you’ll receive priority as a transfer if you’ve already taken calculus. So make sure you check. As far living goes, I lived in laurel and it was really nice. The only thing I didn’t like about it is that you have to purchase a meal plan if you live in laurel or chapparel (not sure about chisolm) and the cafe is ehh at best and I think I had over 100 meals left when I transferred. Although, I hear they now have a chik fil a and a taco cabana on campus now that accepts the meal plan.

yeah the CAP approved coursework .pdf has recommended classes for your UT college of choice and (in some instances) degree, but i still want to ask someone for full confirmation.

i’m a pescatarian (seafood is the only meat i eat, and it’s not often) so most fast food places are out for me anyway. every time i’ve eaten at the cafe i get pizza and a salad or pizza and fries. i prefer to cook tbh, but we’ll see!

i started my housing app today, but can’t continue until they get my immunization records. do i have to request my school to send them? my parents still don’t know if they want me to live on campus, but i’d like to have my application in ASAP anyway.

Would you all recommend sitting with a counselor at UTSA or one from UT to confirm class selection for CAP? DS is considering UTSA for the CAP year (choice between this or A&M). I don’t want it to be a wasted year of tuition. We’re also wondering if he should bother taking the AP exams this year…if he transfers to Austin, will they count for anything?

UT and UTSA handle AP credit differently. At UT, the student must petition for credit and pay a fee. At UTSA, the credits are automatically added to the transcript if they receive eligible scores-even if the student doesn’t want the credit. The eligible scores are different too. He can always take the tests, but not send the scores-or send them later during the CAP year. If UTSA grants credit for the AP scores, and includes the credits on your S’s transcript, UT must accept them.

However, look carefully at the PDF of transferable classes. If your S already has a lot of credits, it may be hard to find 30 hrs to take in-residence at UTSA that both fulfill the CAP contract and apply to your S’s planned degree. [Participating Universities | Coordinated Admission Program | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/cap/admission/schools/)

Your S will need to meet with the CAP advisor at UTSA. UT academic advisors only meet with UT students. Let the CAP contract, along with the degree plan from UT be the ultimate guide. Information in writing trumps personal advice. http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/academics/

i went ahead and typed up all the classes i’d like to take, and highlighted the ones that’ll be covered by AP exams (granted i pass all of the ones i’m taking this year… wish me luck!) i was just wondering if it sounded about right. i did it without the guidance of a parent or counselor, so bear with me! AP are bolded.

i know you won’t be able to tell me for sure, but does it sound about right? i didn’t really count, this is a rough draft. the ap exams i have taken/will take are: Biology, Psychology, English Lan., English Lit., US History, US Government, and Macroeconomics.

The only issue I see is that the non-bolded courses (ones you plan to take in residence) only add up to 29 credits, and 30 are required for CAP. Also, you do need to have a back up plan in case a class you want is full or conflicts with another class.

Make sure you refer to the UT degree plan for your planned major to avoid taking classes that don’t apply. [Colleges and Schools | Why UT? | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/academics/) click on the college and then select your degree plan.

yeah i didn’t add them up yet.

i did refer to the second page of the pdf which points out recommended classes for your desired degree and made my choices based upon that also (Psychology BS)

i made this as my basic guideline, i’ll sit down with my mom and then speak to a counselor before i make my final draft.

thanks though! i’ll pick out some alternative choices tonight.
