S18 got accepted in UUIC CS+STAT, he did not get CS as his first option. Want to study computer and work in related area. Computer science would be better bet, now he has option of Computer ENgg at UCSB (in state), Purdue, UW/Udub, Virginia tech, TAMU
Question: How difficult will it be to transfer to CS ( Engineering School) from his Stat+CS major in LAS school. Iif possible, t will depends on his GPA etc, still want to have a sense of difficulty/chance.
Feedback and opinion will be highly appreciated. Not many high school student knows what CS and Computer Engg career really means/ how they will impact long term.
Though fees OOS is way too much, we are willing to incur Debt as needed, if worth it.
How strongly do you suggest UUIC over UCSB , CSE,( know it is tricky, as so much depends on the candidate itself.).
Thank you sincerely, your opinion will help!
Extremely difficult, kids with 4.0s get rejected trying to transfer into CS in COE. That being said, there is only a minor difference between the 2 majors and it’s not worthwhile to transfer in my opinion. UIUC is a top CS school and coming here would be worth the debt most likely.
Hi, Why CS+STAT in UUIC is worth more, worth the Debt, is that because of UUIC Ranking/Quality of Education. I am comparing to CSE in UCSB in Engg school. This is in the sense, there is partial amount of “computer science” in both the course, (other part is STAT or Computer HW/ECE). So that means the quality of education based on the school is the key, OR is it the combination of CS+STAT which is suitable for the new hot filed of AI, Deep Learning, Machine Learning. Thank you!
Because it’s a CS degree from a top 5 school in CS. You take the exact same core nine CS classes (125,126,173,225,233,241,357,374,421). However instead of taking the same amount of technical electives, STAT+CS takes Statistics classes. And yeah knowledge of stats is very important for AI and Machine Learning.
Son accepted to UIUC CS+STAT and he may not want to transfer to CS only. IT IS POSSIBLE. Here is the guideline Info for the General LAS school to CS in Engg School transfer. They may refuse even with the GPA or accept even if GPS is below 3.67 mark=>
Transferring into Computer Science in the College of Engineering
Students intending to transfer into the Computer Science program in the College of Engineering are normally expected to meet the minimum requirements, below, and follow the petition procedures spelled out in the College of Engineering undergraduate advising wiki.
Transfer requirements for those seeking to transfer for Fall 2015 and beyond:
Because of unusually high enrollments our transfer criteria are as follows:
Students must have a GPA of at least 3.67
Students must take on this campus(): CS 173 and CS 225, both with grade of at least A-
() students who already have credit for one or both of these from elsewhere or via proficiency will need to take subsequent courses in the CS major, such as CS 233 or CS 241, with grades of at least A-.
Submitting your petition: The procedures for applying to CS-Engineering have changed recently. Go to Want to Change Your Major for more information.
Deadlines: Transfer applications are due on November 25th and April 25th for consideration for the following semesters. Students are highly encouraged to register their interest in engineering as soon as possible. They may do this at http://go.engineering.Illinois.edu/exploremajor.
Interesting to note that from General LAS school to transfering into CS+STAT or CS+MATH within the LAS school itself has the SAME difficulty level:=>
Transferring into the Mathematics & Computer Science or Statistics & Computer Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Students must have a GPA of at least 3.67
Students must take at least two courses required for the CS major on this campus, excluding CS 125. (Typically, these courses would be CS 173 and CS 225.) Grades of at least A- must be earned.
LAS Intercollegiate (ICT) and Interdepartmental (IDT) procedures and application deadlines can be found here: http://www.las.illinois.edu/students/programs/declaring/
They’re basically the same major. There’s no point is switching. If you can afford it, come. If not, you have other opportunities.
After campus visit, accepted the offer from UIUC based on the consideration of ranking and depth+breadth of the CS dept at UIUC.
Just received acceptance at UC Berkeley, we live within one hour away, so that changes our plan quite a bit!
Thinking about it and in few days it will be ONE of them, UC Berkeley or UIUC
So, how much easier is it to be admitted into “Statistics & CS” as opposed to the regular CS? Not that either are easy, I’m sure.
While not able to quantify the difference in difficulty in getting admission, can confirm that CS+STAT admission or CS+MATH admission is more easier than just CS program. CS+Stat has less enrollment than CS+math. Just CS program is in Engineering school and has more demand for being more broadbase one can assume.
Thanks @replyback. My son currently thinks he wants to pursue Data Science so it seems like CS+STAT would be his best route.
@bigdadreed , I agree. If one has the aptitude for statistics, the CS+Stat program in UIUC can give your sons somewhat of an edge, especially if looking for job after undergraduate level. Last I saw UIUC website, number of candidates who just graduated with CS+Stat is something like less than 10?
In 2016, total enrollment at UIUC for CS/ CS+Math/CS+Stat is 1105 / 305 /142 respectively.
The graduation rate for these three course in 2014- 2015 was of 261 /23 /8 again for CS/CS+math/CS+Stat respectively.
