To those denied, I hope you still have faith in yourself. It is the school’s loss not to have your brilliant and unique minds. Wipe away any physical or figurative tears away and remember that you kick butt!
To those deferred, I understand your pain, for I too was deferred to one of my choice schools, but I must honestly say that I cried more out of anxiety leading up to my decision than after it. So you too should wipe any physical or figurative tears away and remember that you kick butt!
Accepted oos after being rejected ED from Vanderbilt so I wasn’t expecting this at all! Super excited, 4.5 W and 33 ACT. Honestly, I don’t know what got me in because I had nothing special about me, maybe the essays really do help!
Honestly, who knows!? I honestly just wrote about things I’m passionate about and meaningful to me. I think everyone should do that. Don’t worry about what you think would sound good to the admissions people or overthink your application.
DS accepted!
2250 SAT; 4.7 wGPA;
4 APs with all 5s, taking 5 more this year. OOS.
Really excited for this opportunity!
I got accepted. Super grateful!

Congratulations to everyone accepted!
I was accepted OOS (NY) for poli sci, creative and personal, quirky essays definitely do the trick. SO thankful!
I have a friend who was accepted last year and she said the essays are super important, and that the weirder/more unique they are, the better chance you have at getting in. Her dorm mates both wrote about their quirks. One was that she really loves candles and the other was that she can only have the number for the volume on the TV be a multiple of 3… so yeah the weirder the better lol! And these were all girls who got into the program where they could skip all general ed requirements…
I was accepted too! UW GPA: 3.975. W GPA: 4.329. ACT: 34. OOS CA. Major: International Relations or Sociology. Honestly wasn’t expecting it.
@flyingpig11 Ditto. The acceptance feels pretty good, though!
@whitespace Notification happened 7 days after regional interview for DS.
Congratulations to all who got in.
Accepted!! Thankfully. OOS Cal. SAT 2350

The whole process is a crap shoot. I worked hard but so did everyone else and the odds are against us all.
I have not really posted and am constantly amazed at the way people put themselves out there in these forums.
CC has made a worrisome process bearable.
Everyone on here WILL end up at a school that they love.
Good luck and congrats to all!
@buglyfe19 Im an OOS from CA majoring in international relations too!
Deferred OOS (NY) so kind of not a shocker I guess…

deferred. OOS. NY. Was hoping beyond hope that I would be accepted but not this time. It’s been great reading all the posts and I have to say, @DeanJ, you kept us in the loop better than any other college admissions, and in a great, super informative way. Thank you! Congratulations to all who were accepted. You truly earned it!
Congrats to all accepted, fingers crossed for all deferred and hang in there for those rejected. D was unfortunately deferred as OOS. This question / comment is directed at Dean J…I am just beyond surprised at the stat level of many of the deferrals…how can someone be nominated and current contender (going for their first or second interview in the process) as a Jefferson Scholar and be deferred? If you are a good enough student to warrant a nomination AND be moving forward through the interview / selection process how can you not be worthy of acceptance? I know there were phenomenally qualified applicants…but isn’t it a bit strange for students to be deferred while they are progressing through the scholarship process? Just trying to wrap my head around this unbelievably challenging college application process.
@lvmjac1 It’s a horrible process and your situation sounds especially awful. I’m stunned by the stats of some of the in-state applicants who were flat-out rejected yesterday. A friend’s daughter goes to a top public high school, had 34 ACT and 1430 SAT scores, excellent grades and rigor, ECs, etc and was not even deferred! Flat-out rejected. But some lesser-qualified “legacies” in our area got in. I wish UVA – as a state school – would do away with the legacy policy. Good luck to you and your daughter.
@this8120 UVA cares a lot about finding out who “you” are in your essays. I hesitate to say they care more about that than stats, but I believe that it can undermine stats if you don’t do anything meaningful, or appear fake or flat. You most likely didn’t read her entire application, you never know someone else’s circumstances.
Secondly, UVA has one of the largest endowments in the country. This is due to the fact that so many alumni remain loyal to the school. A large endowment allows them to make UVA a contender as a top tier/ prestigious university. Getting rid of the legacy policy could risk the benefits they get from such an involved, loyal alumni base. However, the biggest legacy boost is if you’re OOS, being a legacy and in-state minimally affects your application. People with stronger connections, i.e. family or friends in the admissions committee would get a large boost, naturally.
