@crazym0m They are treated as Virginians as in it is as easy for them to get in as it is for an average in-state applicant. That doesn’t mean they are counted as an in-state student. They are still a part of the OOS %.
UVa admissions does not nominate Jefferson Scholars. It is a separate issue. A region/ high school can think all they want that the candidate they are putting forward is the best thing since sliced bread. Doesn’t mean UVa does.
I know a number of schools in our region don’t put forth their top candidate in their school as the Jefferson nominee but the top candidate that they perceive as most committed to going to UVA. From our school the Jefferson candidate was denied and that has happened before. Not a great system and probably also why our school has never had a Jefferson scholar despite sending lots of kids to Ivies and such which the Jefferson is supposed to prevent to keep the top students at UVA.
Wow…looking back at the results of the many deferred/rejected OOS applicants, I am incredibly more grateful for being accepted. And hearing about who did/didn’t get in at school today was incredibly humbling and shocking too; so many qualified people with insane stats and great activities shut out. Is UVa especially selective this year? Seriously, most of these deferrals are for incredibly qualified students, as well as those rejected - I have no doubt that you guys will have great options and make the most of your college experience. Seriously.
@crazym0m , I have attended the legacy workshop three times in the last 6 years. Each time the liaison told us that OOS legacies have an advantage of being considered in-state for stats such as GPA and test scores. This means that their test scores and grades are compared to those of in-state applicants. But, OOS legacies are OOS and count as OOS for tuition and admission ratios. There is no real legacy advantage for in-state students like my kids. My kids were told to take the most rigorous curriculum that their high school offered and to strive for As in those classes. They learned the difference between “hard” and “soft” APs. They got in to UVA, but they were in the top 5% of their classes and were competitive applicants. The legacy status very likely did not come into play in their cases.

@“Dean J” j I have explored the UVA admissions site high and low but cannot find information about WHEN Echols and College Science Scholars notifications occur for those accepted EA. Will you address that please? Thanks.
@dowzerw She did. Read her blog. Post “Get Ready for a #Cavalanche of #UVA20 Hoos!” number 5.

Congratulations to everyone admitted! UVA is an amazing place and Charlottesville is hard to beat when it comes to college towns.
Deferred OOS
Good stats, dedicated ECs, well-written essays and recs…
Accepted and ecstatic! UVA provided one of the most transparent application processes of all 17 schools I applied to and I am incredibly grateful for that. Thank you @“Dean J” for your dedication and commitment to your applicants. I can’t imagine that maintaining a blog, twitter and sifting through the immense volume of applicants was easy, but as somebody on the other side of the process, I can assure you it was worth it. Even on days when I felt antsy, your adorable dog picture and updates made me feel so much better. Thank you for everything you do and for putting a smile on my and many others faces this stressful application season! I hope to come down and visit soon. I am so excited with my acceptance. WAHOOWA!
Thought I’d throw in my stats as a reference.

Rather confused as to why I didn’t get in, but I’m hoping for good news in April…
@ecosler24 I had an incredibly similar application to yours, and I was deferred as well. I guess now we wait.
@whitespace Wishing you the best of luck! Im still wondering what I could have done differently… 8-|
@ecosler24 Thanks. I know what I did to get deferred, or at least I think I do. My grades fell off a cliff second semester junior year after having a consistent 4.0 before. So I probably shouldn’t have applied early, and waited for them to see my midyear report, but I didn’t. I was pretty much expecting to be deferred. Best of luck to you! It can be frustrating.
Accepted!
School of Engineering (Comp Sci.)
SAT: 2140 (760M, 730CR, 650W)
ACT: 34 (33R, 34M, 34M, 35S)
SAT(II): 750M, 690 Chem
GPA: 95.2 (School doesn’t weight or use 4.0 scale)
Senior Course Load: Spanish 6 (Already taken AP), AP Physics C, AP English Language/Seminar, AP Government, AP Calculus AB, Web Design
I’ve taken pretty much every advanced class my school has- at least that has to do with Math or Science. I’m looking to study Comp Sci, so I haven’t worried too much about different foreign languages or English except for AP Spanish and Lang next year.
AP Scores: 4(Bio, Euro), 5(Chem,APUSH), 3(Spanish)
Volunteer/ECs: 100+ hours at CHKD (local children’s hospital), 100+ hours at local soup kitchen, Internship at NASA Langley, wrote and presented software that helped to discover voids in carbon-fiber sheets.
Not sure about my class ranking, my school doesn’t necessarily give it out, but I think I’m in the top 5%.
Just adding some stats for DS: Deferred, OOS, SAT 2130, ACT 33, unweighted GPA 3.8, weighted 4.6, good ECs and recs. Solid and sincere essays ( I thought - tough for my guy to be so publicly introspective LOL). UVA is the first school we’ve heard back from, so it’s kind of a bummer. But the caliber of students! Holy bird poop Batman! You all are amazing, lovely, hard-working achievers. Your school of choice will be lucky to have you. Shine on.
