UVA 2020 EA Results/Discussion Thread

Any idea when/how we will hear about Echols and Rodman scholars? I know Dean J said something about hearing this week on the blog, but Im not sure if the snow will delay things (or how exactly we find out). Is it in the admissions packet in the mail? Or does it come separate?

Accepted OOS!!
2190 (670 CR 740 M 780 W)
4.12/4.3

My essays and my art portfolio were the strongest parts of my application in case you’re wondering how I got in lol. So excited I have no words!!

@collegebound1915 it will for sure be in our acceptance letters if we get it

Accepted OOS into Kineosology
2130 SAT ( 700M, 700CR, 730W)
3.85 UW GPA, 4.2ish W
Like 10 AP Classes or something like that through senior year
100 or so volunteer hours
Bunch of clubs and activites, most notable being the record holder of two national powerlifting records

My EC’s and Essays were the strongest parts of my application so thats probably how I got in but I am so excited!!

In the statistics released today it is interesting that the yield for in-state is around 60% but the yield for OOS is only around 23%. Even if UVA could admit more OOS, only 23% would attend so that would hurt the school rankings that depend on yield rate.

324

Most college decisions are driven by two primary factors – price and academic reputation. The price/value proposition for UVA in-state is outstanding and that accounts for the 60% yield. Which exceeds the yield at Williams, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame. Not all that far from the 70% yield at Yale and Princeton. UVA in-state has about the same yield as Penn and Brown. And also about the same as University of Nebraska/Lincoln.

The price/value proposition for out-of-state is completely different. The smart OOS kids who get into UVA also get into a lot of similar reputation schools with a net price similar to the OOS price at UVA. UVA’s OOS yield of 26% is in line with, for example, Boston College (29% yield) and Emory (29%).

I don’t think yield is part of the USNWR formula. Things like SAT scores and graduation rates are most important to the ranking formula. Getting strong OOS students to attend UVA would help on those metrics.

Yield is driven primarily by cost/value, but other things enter in as well. Top three yield schools year in/year out are Harvard, Stanford and…BYU.

To add toy results posted a few days ago, I got accepted into the School of Engineering.

To add to my results posted a few days ago, I got accepted into the School of Engineering (Electrical). I didn’t report any AP scores.
My senior course load includes 5 AP classes (Physics C Mechanics, Spanish V, English Lit, Calc BC, Stats), and 2 Advanced classes.

“I’m from Maryland.
Accepted
4.14 W, 3.55 UW
SAT 2120 (720 CR, 690 M, 710 W)
SAT II: Didn’t report any
Essays: Idk. They were decent I think, but they were written last minute.
Recs: I think they were pretty good. I got recs 2 teachers (AP Psych & AP Calc AB), and 1 from my principal.”

Quick stats - I keep forgetting to post!

Accepted - CAS, instate
4.5 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
ACT - 34 (36 Reading, 36 English, 33 Science, 31 Math)
SAT II: Did not report
Schedule: 10 APs, most rigorous my school offers
Rank: idk, school does not rank - I’m somewhere in the top 10%
ECs: multiple leadership positions, quite a bit of involvement elsewhere (will not list for privacy reasons)
Recs: very strong - I sent 4 I think but would not advise this; it was kind of excessive looking back on it…
Essays: Written November 1 in under an hour, but writing is my strength so they were still probably alright. My common app essay was the best piece Ive ever written and very unique

Hope this helps! Congrats to everyone accepted, and hold your head up if you got deferred. I’ve already had it happen to me at my top choice school, and while its devastating, you are all going to move on and do amazing things. Don’t let college admissions define you - Im still working on this piece of advice myself. No matter what happens, everything will work out in the end

Congrats to all who were accepted!! Here are my son’s stats:

ACCEPTED OOS - CAS (Math)
3.97 UW, 5.4 W (Honors/AP/IB) - 6 AP/IB Classes Senior Year
SAT 2380 (800 CR, 800 M, 780 W)
Essays: Excellent
Recs: Varsity XC, Basketball, lots of community service

When do/did acceptance packets get sent out?

Don’t know, but Dean J’s blog yesterday had a picture of them all, with the note that they would be going out “soon.” Based on her past approach to posting, I interpret that as a hint that they were going in the mail yesterday. So I’m hoping something gets to my house by tomorrow - though we haven’t seen a mailman since Saturday, so that could be wishful thinking.

UPDATE: Dean J’s blog now says they Rodman, Echols, etc., letters are being mailed Friday.

My friend’s daughter was deferred OOS. Does anyone know the acceptance rate for deferrals?

My daughter was accepted about a week ago. We thought it was early and weren’t expecting a decision already

@goingnutsmom when asked on her blog, Dean J wasn’t comfortable providing a number since deferred applicants may withdraw, etc. She did tell folks that 10% was incorrect, implying a better percentage. Nothing definitive though.

@goingnutsmom from my experience, deferred students usually get in RD because they flat-out deny the apps they wouldn’t accept RD. But I don’t know for sure

jk. I’m good

I was deferred EA, definitely a tough blow and confusing as I was admitted into Michigan and UNC- CH OOS. I made all A’s First semester senior year so the adcom will see that soon… is there anything else I can do to increase my chances in the RD round?
