Im looking into UVA and i wanted to know if it has any kind of reputation for partying, any help?

Not really a party school, but there is quiet a lot of partying. If you are looking for party schools in Virginia, JMU or W&L will be your best bets. If you are looking for solid academic programs, try the University of Richmond or the College of William & Mary. As for UVa, the academic load is not extremely burdensome (although the classes are hard) and there are many. Try looking on the Princeton Review for this. Their "Academic Rating" is very helpful. UVa has an 87/99.

"If you are looking for solid academic programs, try the University of Richmond or the College of William & Mary. As for UVa, the academic load is not extremely burdensome "

This person is an idiot, UVA is THE best school in Virginia, and is rated 22 nationally, and considered by many to be THE best public, the academics are top notch, and everything else!

"This person is an idiot, UVA is THE best school in Virginia, and is rated 22 nationally, and considered by many to be THE best public, the academics are top notch, and everything else!"

Yep, right there next to UC Berkeley.

agreed uva and berkeley are very different but both are THE TOP PUBLICS period(.)

calm down uvajoe, no one was hating on your school, lol. Saying "the academic load is not extremely burdensome" is not at all like "you're school is awful and you get a bad education." I think you were a little over zealous there.

for the OP:

The party scene at UVA is big, yes. But if you don't want it, I'm sure there are other things to do.

UVa is just one of those schools where you get the best of both worlds: academic and social. As I've heard it, they do have quite a lot of parties for one of the top academically-ranked schools.

Amongst the US News top 25, UVA could be considered somewhat of a party school. Its students do have a good time, but, at the same time, they perform to a very high academic standard. Many students every year get into top 10 law, medical, and PhD programs. This past year, two students were named rhodes scholars.

You will lose nothing in terms of academics by going to UVA. It may not have stratospheric SAT medians or multitudes of Nobel Prize winning physicists, but it's still an excellent school.

By the way, disregard the comment referring to the Princeton Review. PR is a helpful website, but its academic and admissions "ratings" can be very misleading, and, in many cases, inaccurate.

"This person is an idiot, UVA is THE best school in Virginia, and is rated 22 nationally, and considered by many to be THE best public, the academics are top notch, and everything else!"

I resent being call an idiot. You were clearly unable to grasp what I was saying, and in no way did I suggest that UVa is not one of the best institutions of higher learning in the U.S. Let me explain myself further: I was talking in terms of the academic stress, not academic quality. It is true that UVa students face a much ligher (although not light by any measure) academic load than W&M students. This allows for quite a lot of partying, which was what the question was orginally about if you recall.

That being said, we all know who is (or isn't in my case) the idiot here.

As for Princeton Review ratings, I agree that they are not perfect. But they are not imperfect either, so considering them is not a bad idea.

Anyone who would post a pr review academic rating as an argument against the academic rigor of UVA(long considered the best public, now next to berk) is an idiot!

BTW, you clearly stated "If you are looking for solid academic programs, try the University of Richmond or the College of William & Mary. As for UVa, the academic load is not extremely burdensome" this implies that uva is not where you should look for solid academic programs. I did not fail to "grasp" what you where saying, you are just inarticulate!

Woah let's calm down in this thread. UVa is a "party school" in the sense that students there know how to have a good time, greek life is big, and the people are very sociable and friendly. It is NOT a "party school" in the sense that you don't have to work hard or classes are a joke or nobody cares about academics.

UVa is really the best of both worlds, social and academic, and joins select few schools who really excel in both areas. Some similar social atmospheres are USC and Vanderbilt.

UVa is not a party school so much as it is a work hard play hard school.

Let's just all take a deep breath. I agree with the posting that UVa. incorporates both the social and academic aspects of the college experience very well. Now how is it that students at UVa. find much more time to party than those at W&M? It's because the academic load (note I did not say rigor) is lighter (but not by any standard light). This allows for the down-time that leads to partying. Have you ever had classes at BOTH UVa. and W&M? I can tell you, there IS a difference!!!

Now, as for the Princeton Review Academic Rating: I did not refer to it to make a case against UVa. academics, but for it. But, again, it is not a perfect measure.

Please allow room for others opinions, or refrain from commenting on them if you cannot absorb their contents. Thank you.

alright thanks, pretty much im a good student, but most of the people i hang out wtih arent and i enjoy going out, i was just making sure that if i went to uva i wouldnt be bored

Yea, i really need to calm down. UVA is fun, and there is a good party life outside the academics.

'aright thanks, pretty much im a good student, but most of the people i hang out wtih arent and i enjoy going out, i was just making sure that if i went to uva i wouldnt be bored"

Well if you are a good student then that is just going to make your social life better. Why? Because you won't have to study as much as others. But let me tell you, if your buddies got into UVa., it means that they met a certain level of academic standard. So I'm sure they are not bad students. Bascically, yeah, you'll be fine unless you attempt to isolate yourself intentionally.

i meant here in high school, none of my friends will be going to uva

if you want to go out, there are plenty of other kids at uva to be out with.

Haha... UVA is definitely a party school. You won't work too too hard, and you'll have a lot of fun, and you'll get a very respectable degree. Pretty sweet deal, huh? BTW, I'm a Charlottesville native, not going to UVA (though I kind of wish I was...) Just felt like I needed to get out a bit.

U of R? Is an academically rigorous school? Huh. Coulda fooled me.

(BTW- the motto at my High School was that OoVa Soo-cks, because like half the class ends up there. All the VA schools are pretty good, esp. for public schools. UVA has partying, because it's in nowhere Virginia, but honestly, pretty much every school (even good ones) has a party scene. By no means do you have to get involved.)
