I’m a junior in high school and I want to go to UVa and was wondering how likely it is that I’ll be able to get in. I’m OOS have a 3.75 unweighted GPA (4.61 weighted), got a 1310 on my PSATs in the fall and have yet to take ACT/SAT (I know that doesn’t help much at all, sorry!), I have over 600 hours of volunteering, and am co founding a current events club and a female political leadership club at my school, I am a part of National Honor Society, and I also do horseback riding. I don’t have that many ECs because I was gone for a few weeks my sophomore year because I had a very intense surgery that pulled me out of school for 6 weeks. I also have a job right now and have one lined up for summer (and I’ll keep the one I have now so I’ll be working two jobs over the summer), and I have multiple solid sources for letters of rec lined up as of right now. Thanks so much!
Correction** I actually only have around 425 hours documented, and if it helps I also have gotten a 4 on my AP Human Geography Test, and a % on my AP US History test.
UVA is an extremely high reach for any OOS applicants and your stats are on the low end of people admitted. You’re a junior though so I would work on getting some more ECs and you can also talk about your circumstances on your application. SAT/ACT would help in chancing you too.
I don’t play the chances game. However, I have to point out how much real estate you gave to activities in your post. Your academic preparation got half of one sentence in your post.
If you apply, we’ll be most concerned with your academic preparation. Activities don’t get you an offer of admission. Being a student is your full time job. Don’t let side gigs overshadow your full time job.
BTW, we ask for one letter of rec from a counselor and one from a teacher. That’s it. We do not want non-academic recommendations. We turned the non-academic rec function off in the Common App.
@sydney72001 You’ve now heard it from an insider, Dean J. You’re very lucky to get such direct guidance from source who actually is a ‘decider.’ I’d pay attention as you continue your search.
