Can I consider UVA a safety?
Stats quick run-down:
3.9 UW, 4.5 W
2100 SAT
In-State
Double Legacy (Father and Grandfather)
Strong, focused ECs
Good Recs
If it can't be considered a safety then what in-state school should I consider for safety?
Looking to study Economics or Business
Thanks

Run this by your own high school guidance counselor. That person can tell you how many students with your grades and test scores have been admitted at UVA in recent years.

Unless an institution admits solely by the numbers, and you have the GPA and test scores that will get you an auto-admit, you can’t consider it to be a real safety. Pretty safe, maybe, but truly safe, no.

In VA your flat-out guaranteed safeties are the community colleges. Most of them have formal articulation agreements that guarantee transfer into the VA universities. Take a look at those as well.

Yes, OP. As an in-state especially, you can consider UVA a safety with those numbers

From first glance your sat look a little low for it to be a safety. I too would agree with the suggestion to talk to your counselor!

OP, you’re competing against the students in your high school more than against other in-state or OOS applicants. Check Naviance and see who from your h.s. is getting into UVA, and then talk to your guidance counselor.

UVa is never a safety for any student, even instate. I have seen too many kids, top 5%, very involved, get denied, while their peers get accepted. A match, certainly, but not a safety. It’s too unpreditctable no matter your scores (2300+), acomplishment (published authors, national championships), gpa (3.9uw)… I’ve seen all denied. Legacy is really only a benefit to OOS students who are evaluated with the same criteria as instate students.

If you haven’t already done so, contact the UVa Alumni Admission Liason. They offer services to meet with alumni and prospective students, review transcripts, go over the admission process, offer advise. There is no connection to UVa Admissions however people have found it very helpful.

Keep in mind, to study business at UVa you must take two years of prereqs and apply to McIntire in the Spring of your second year. McIntire is a two year, very selective, highly ranked, business program. It’s a gamble. If you aren’t admitted you must choose another major, commonly Econ.

I have to assume you’re joking. (Or very naive.)

This. QFT.

It is particularly not a safety if the OP is from NOVA (competing with TJ, etc grads).

UVA is not a safety, just a match.

A safety would be UVA Wise, James Madison, Mary Washington, Christopher Newport (publics) or Roanoke, Randolph-Macon, Lynchburg, Randolph, Sweet Briar or Hampden Sydney.

Not a safety. UVA’s acceptance rate is under 30%, and a 2100 SAT CR+M+W puts you somewhere in their second quartile, possibly third quartile for one or more subscores, depending on how that 2100 breaks down.

Match, yes; safety, no, definitely not. I’m sure they reject or waitlist students with similar stats all the time.

Thanks for all the help. I will most likely go for JMU as a safety.

My current Sr. is also interested in Econ and instate. JMU has a good business school, rated 29th. If you are looking for an alternative, you might look into Miami-Ohio. Their business school, Farmer, is ranked 22nd. As we all know, rankings aren’t everything, and that’s why my son continued to look after touring JMU. The school is bigger then he wants and the fit just didn’t seem right. Miami offers guaranteed merit of half-full tuition for 3.7/1400. It’s a beautiful campus, about 15k students, something to consider if JMU doesn’t hit the right note with you. No, It’s not UVa (which I’m partial to myself), but you’re looking for a safety school and both have good business schools.

My 2011 grad has friends at JMU that love it, so it’s really just a matter of fit and preference.

I would suggest you consider Christopher Newport University as a safety. You most likely would be eligible for their honors program and they have a brand new business building that is very nice.
