UVa Chances?

Class of 2016 (Rising Senior)

I know that I should ask my exact chances as it might lower my chances due to a lack of confidence, but I just wanted some critique and suggestions on what I can do to improve my chances.

Some of the stats may be off, but I’m going by my calculations and my overall ‘guess’

Current Unweighted GPA: 3.96?, Prospective Unweighted GPA: 3.969 (I had 1 B in 9th Grade, out of 33 total high-school courses). Current Weighted GPA: 4.032. Prospective Weighted GPA: 4.294. I am assuming I am and will be the top 1-2% of my class, Salutatorian hopeful

Note- My school is weird… Instead of a 5 for all AP classes, they do a .036 addon for each AP course, so my Weighted GPA will probably be lower compared to most nationwide schools (I have and will have taken 9 total AP courses).

SAT Scores: (Took it this past winter, 1st time taking it as well, so I understand the scores are much lower than they should be. Math- 680, Critical Reading- 560, Writing- 580, Total: 1820, I plan to take it at least twice more. Also plan to take the ACT once or twice, as well as the SAT Subject tests: US History, Math I, and Physics.

Sorry for the lengthy article, I just want to be thorough on my research, any feedback is appreciated! P.S. I am instate (From Southwest Virginia, very poor county so I’m underprivileged compared to many Virginia schools.)

Middle School matters not at all.

Here are the two most important things for you:

“I am assuming I am and will be the top 1-2% of my class, Salutatorian hopeful.”

“P.S. I am instate (From Southwest Virginia, very poor county so I’m underprivileged compared to many Virginia schools.)”

You’re at the top of your class, and you’re a Virginia resident. I think your chances are excellent.

Do not take the SAT over and over and over again. If you are sure you can do significantly better, retake once at most. DO take the SAT subject tests - they are strongly suggested but not required, which basically means if you don’t have them you had better have a very good reason why not. Try the ACT (practice tests at least) to see if it’s better suited to your strengths.

And start working on your essays early. Write a draft essay for every single optional question, and then pick the most interesting ones to develop for your application.
