Posting on behalf of my son.

Accepted Major: Chemical Engineering

SAT:
SAT IIs: Bio-M 770 Math 2-700
ACT: 34 (single sitting)
GPA: 4.786 weighted
Rank: 1/147
Other stats:

Subjective:
Essays: He worked hard on them. Essay for the common app had interesting and creative opening. He also wrote an essay for the “additional comments section” of the common app that I thought was good too. He enjoyed the engineering essay prompt about what would he do if he had money for a small engineering project. He also answered the prompt about his “quirks” and what else do you want us to know as we look over your academic record, wrote about the disadvantages of a small rural high school and what he’s done to overcome.
Teacher Recs: Probably good.
Counselor Rec: Probably good.
Hook (if any): None

Location/Person:
State or Country:North Carolina
School Type: Public, small and rural
Ethnicity:W
Gender:M

Other Factors: Lots of extracurriculars and volunteer work. Taekwondo (tkd) Blackbelt 2nd degree, tkd junior leader, tkd instructor, goat shearer for local farmers, processed donations at a community thrift store that funded a food pantry, flutist Sunday services at his church, guest flutist for a church in a neighboring town, youth representative on church administrative council.
Comments: Hoping for some good aid because being OOS, he’s going to need it. But happy and excited to be accepted. Loved the school when we visited last month. Honestly, we thought he might not get in when we looked at the stats for OOS students last year but now we’re glad he applied.

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

-Band (section leader in marching band 12th), involved in marching band, winter guard, symphonic band, wind ensemble
-other small stuff (NHS, Mock Trial, etc.) where I was just a member, not a leader or anything
[] Job/Work Experience: paid research internship at a research university over the summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: volunteer at local hospital 4 hrs/week
[] Summer Activities: CTY, research
[] Essays: realized a month after submission that I omitted an “s” (so the singular/plural didn’t match) in the first line of the second paragraph of my common app essay and freaked out but looks like they overlooked it :), it was a good piece other than that though…as for the UVA ones I took a more serious approach, my engineering project was specifically related to my goals in cancer research and my quirk was really heartfelt
[] Teacher Recommendation: probably just okay, one from my math teacher which was pretty general and another on which I didn’t read
[] Counselor Rec: I believe it was good, she seems to like me but it was probably also on the general side since she deals with 400 kids and I see her about 1-2 times per year.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: n/a
[] Supplementary Material: I included my research abstract in the “additional information” section on the common app…does that count as supplementary?

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] School Type: Medium Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Not a candidate for financial aid.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: essays, standardized tests
[] Weaknesses: freshman/sophomore year grades, lack of proofreading/typo in common app essay, lackluster EC’s
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my essays pulled me through. There haven’t been any acceptances at UVA from my school for 3 years and being an OOS student you never know. I took risks in my essays and I think they paid off.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at Rutgers and UMich

[/ul]**General Comments: ** Yay! Perfect way to make Friday night even better. Not sure if I’ll attend (OOS tuition = meh) but it is a top choice. Congrats to all who got in, stick it out to all who got deferred, and to those who were rejected: don’t dwell on it, there are tons of great schools that will accept you, the admissions process is such a crapshoot nowadays for the most part so keep your head up high! :)

Stats:
SAT: 2090 as of recently. (But the score I sent in was a 1980…) CR: 640 M: 690 W:650

Other stats: N/A

Subjective:
Essays: I think they were okay… I have short-term memory so I can’t remember exactly what I wrote but I remember doing the “tweet” essay and writing some really quirky. I underestimate myself sometimes but I don’t think my CommonApp essay was spectacular.
Teacher Recs: My AP Computer Graphics teacher wrote a really strong one. My AP Chem teacher wrote a generic one.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it.
Hook (if any): I sent in an art supplement of my work in computer graphics…

Location/Person:
State or Country: Maryland
School Type: Public school with prestigious science and technology program
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Female

Other Factors: I actually can’t believe I got in, especially after seeing everyone with these high test scores and GPAs. Affirmative action may be at hand here but I want to say that my art supplement helped and maybe my grades in my AP science classes. My ECs aren’t great either but I’ve done some volunteer stuff and internships over the summer and I’m currently developing and conducting a study at a university.

Stats:
SAT: didn’t send

 • School Type: Public with high-performing IB program inset
 • Ethnicity: White
 • Gender: F
 • Income Bracket: do not need FA
 • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none.

Reflection

 • Strengths: 36 on ACT, very passionate about my ECs, essays were great - my CA essay was about an activity that probably made me stand out. Not a sport or anything that could sway my decision or bring attention to the university, but it was funny and probably made me memorable because I doubt many teenagers do it.
 • Weaknesses:
 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong academic base for my application with great essays on top.

General Comments: Work on your essays, especially your school-specific ones! I was deferred from other top schools EA and I’m sure it was because I wrote their essays at the last minute and they were terrible. Granted, I didn’t exactly write my UVA essays ahead of time, but I had been thinking about them and formulating ideas for months. And be honest! Mine were straightforward, not really about anything tremendously unique or that had a twist/hook at the beginning or end, but I think they represented me very well even though they were plain. And finally, congratulations to everyone else who was admitted! :)

For all the early applicants, can I get in early decision?
I have a 29 ACT and a 4.29 gpa and 3.75 unweighted gpa. I got straight this semester with 5 ap classes so my gpa is now a 4.4 weighted and 3.8 unweighted. I’ve taken 9 ap and ib classes my Junior and Senior year. My two teacher recommendations are awesome. One of the recommendations is from a teacher who attended UVA. I have a lot of leadership positions and extracurricular. I would say my essays are pretty darn good. Thank you so much (:
I’m also instate!
