Counselor Rec: Good i guess
Hook (if any):

Location/Person:
State or Country: NY
School Type: Catholic

-student council

General Comments: Honestly pretty surprised I got in but I’m not asking any questions.

-____- this thread makes me upset

STATS
SAT: 2300
SAT IIs: 750 Math II, 750 Chem, 800 WH
GPA: 3.81
Rank: 15/400(?)

SUBJECTIVE
Essays: amazing. My common app essay has made people cry, my engineering essay (“what would you do with a small amount of funding?”) is currently in the semifinals of a startup competition, and everyone seems to laugh at my free choice essay.
Teacher Recs: I haven’t seen them; I expect they’re good but generically so
Counselor Rec: he likes me very much, but I don’t think he knows me very well
Extracurriculars: Won a national engineering contest and placed highly in another; a few NASA programs, some engineering research, FIRST Robotics Competition, and a bunch of leadership. Very aerospace engineering focused (supported by national awards, summer programs, and leadership) but balanced by sports, work, and the performing arts.

DEMOGRAPHICS
Location/Person: OOS
School Type: public
Ethnicity: I’ve got as much color as a snowball
Gender: XX

Strengths: National awards, considerable aerospace engineering focus, some non-STEM to round me out; I think my essays made the difference because UVA really seems to care about them.
Weaknesses: OOS and generic recs. Clearly didn’t hurt me.

I was also selected as a Rodman scholar.

Many of the deferred/rejected people in this thread seem to be placing way too much emphasis on stats. They’re really not that important.

ACCEPTED (and i dont know how…)

SAT: 2210 (730 Reading 700 Math 780 Writing)
ACT: None

Stats:

SAT: 2150 (710CR, 730M, 710W 10 E)
ACT: N/A
SAT IIs: 760 USH, 730 Math II

Jazz Band (11,12; first chair senior year)
National Honor Society (11,12; President senior year)
15 hr/wk retail job
Bowling Club all four years

Essays: I really liked them, other people really liked them. I’d say it’s a little hard to judge your own essays.

Teacher Recs: I read one which was pretty meh, the other one I’m not sure about but I’m sure it was at least decent.

Counselor Rec: Probably decent, thinks I’m the best thing since sliced bread but he actually barely knows me, so…

Hook (if any): None of the common ones. If there was anything, I would say geographic diversity (underrepresented state) and the fact that my school’s average SAT is ~1250/2400

Location/Person:
State or Country: OOS, U.S.
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M

Other Factors: Like I said, bad school (at least on paper) and maybe because I’m from a weird state. I doubt those made that much of a difference, but worth noting. Also I have around 30 college credits from my state flagship with a 4.0, which I think helped.

General Comments: Also accepted to Georgetown EA, Honors college at UVM, Drexel, and my state flagship. Waiting on UNC EA (OOS), USC, Cornell, Penn, and Dartmouth. Not expecting much from those, lol.

Other
State (if domestic applicant): N/A
Country (if international applicant): China
School Type: International
Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
Strengths: standardized scores, diversity of ECs
Weaknesses: student interview, the whole time I was trying to sooth the atmosphere and make them laugh but they didn’t so it’s pretty embarrassing…
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: 'Cause I’m lucky enough?
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: None Deferred: Yale, Michigan-Ann Arbor, HKUST
General Comments: For moments I thought I would got deferred from all my EA schools! Thanks to UVA, I didn’t!! Good luck to all the RD applicants!

@grp2013

Since applying to UVA, other great schools have come through with merit scholarship packages for her, so she will likely decide to go elsewhere. Simple cost/benefit analysis. Money isn’t the issue.

She is my first college kid. I encouraged her to apply that all of the schools that she was interested in attending. UVA is her “reach”. I would be very proud to send her to Virginia.

Accepted! Engineering

Stats:
SAT: 2030 (didn’t send)
ACT: 33
SAT IIs: 650 math 2, 690 chem, 770 bio
GPA: 3.93
Rank: 14/812
Other stats: Ap scholar w/ distinction, national merit commended

Subjective:
Essays: worked on them the day before the deadline and rush mailed them 5 minutes before the post office closed. They were pretty strange.
Teacher Recs: generic
Counselor Rec: generic
Hook (if any): questbridge

State or Country: Florida
School Type: large public (3500 people)
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender:F

General Comments: I know that my sat 2 scores mostly suck. I think my questbridge essay was the real factor in the decision, even if I didn’t get in through college match. It truly demonstrated the struggle I have gone through to stay ahead with academics and extracurriculars when other people at my school hire tutors and counselors to do everything they need. I think the hardest part in applying was dealing with the guidance at my high school. With all of the stuff they deal with, its rare to find them in a compliant mood. I am so happy! Now I don’t have to take another trip to guidance to apply to my local safety school.

Dean J mentioned in College (Un)Bound piece on LinkedIn and linked from Facebook, on why a rejection can be good news.

Last year I won a full merit scholarship from the US and Finnish governments to live with a host family in Finland for six weeks (I wrote my essay about this). I still volunteer with the exchange organization.
Job/Work Experience: Internship at a plantation in the development office and curator’s office. I also hold a leadership position in the dorms at my school - junior year I was a leader (like an RA) in the freshman dorm, where I helped the girls with their study skills, roommate drama, homesickness, etc.
Teacher Recs: I assume very good, I go to a very small boarding school so the students get a lot of support from the teachers and get to know each other very well.
Counselor Rec: I assume very good to excellent.
Essay: I think my essay was very good, I have been accepted to all my early action schools so far. I wrote about my experience going abroad to Finland independently. Of course, I continued to revise and think it got much better for my January applications, but we will see! I wrote my UVA “quirk” essay about how I am a very logical thinker.

@ChemEngDoctor mine said the same thing. I’ve been searching to see if I got into my major!!

 • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none sadly

Reflection

 • Strengths: top ranked high school, I guess they like really weird essays???
 • Weaknesses: GPA, ECs, work experience, no hook at all, pretty bad AP exam scores…
 • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: test scores, pretty good major awards I guess?..this is hard because I’m not an admissions officer

General Comments: After all of the deferrals and rejections I’ve gotten, this was pretty nice. Congratulations to everyone who got in, and if you didn’t, do not feel bad. There are schools out there for you.
