Reflection

Strengths: essays, ACT, course load and gpa
Weaknesses: ECs, SAT
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m pretty borderline
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from U of Michigan. Accepted to Purdue.

General Comments:
Really disappointed that I’ve been deferred from another school. UM is probably my #1, but UVA was a close second. 3 long months ahead as I wait for yet another decision. I wish they’d just give me a decision now, even if they just denied me outright. The waiting is the worst.

**Decision: Accepted - School of Arts and Sciences **

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2210 (Math: 800, Writing: 780, Reading: 630. I took it once)
ACT: Did not take
SAT II: Chemistry (800), Math II (780)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): ~3.8
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not rank
AP (place score in parenthesis):5: AP U.S. History, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus BC (and AB subscore), AP Microeconomics, AP macroeconomics, AP Chemistry,. 4: AP World History.
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics C, AP Chinese, AP Environmental Science, Multi-variable Calculus/Matrix Algebra (semester courses), English 12 Honors, AP Government, AP Statistics
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major. Went to the state competition for Intel but didn’t place. I got National Merit Semifinalist but I don’t think that’s very major
Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Track team (10, 11, 12), Cross country team (10, 11, 12), Science fair (9, 10, 11) - went to regional/state competitions, Science Honor Society Vice President, Math Honor Society, Computer Science Club President (11, 12)

Job/Work Experience:Worked as a teacher’s assistant at one of those places that has a bunch of asian kids whose parents want them to study more over the summer. I went to the NIH over junior year to do work at the Lung/Blood Institute.

Volunteer/Community service: Relay for life (10, 11, 12), teaching English to Chinese-born people (10)

Summer Activities: NIH (mentioned previously), also this summer, I spent three months researching materials science and wrote a paper on my project. Submitted to Siemens, but didn’t win anything. :frowning:

Essays: I’d say common app was 7.5/10. It was about how running changed my life. I thought it wasn’t really special or anything. For the supplementals - the one about a work of science that impressed you, I wrote about graphene and the work I did over the summer. I’d say this one was probably 9.5/10. The last one I wrote about ASMR, probably an 8/10 (going back to it, I realize I could’ve made it so much better)

Teacher Recommendation: In my honest opinion - 7/10 for one (Chemistry teacher), and 9/10 (AP Econ teacher)
Counselor Rec: 8/10? I talk to my counselor sometimes, and we’re pretty chill

Ski Club (4 years)
Peer Mediation (4 years)
some other misc. stuff
Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: 100-120 hours over the last three summers at a horseback riding camp for children with disabilities
Summer Activities: College class in ASL at Rutgers, Volunteering
Essays: I picked the flash seminar essay, and chose to make my flash seminar about affirmative action at the Kamehemeha Schools in Hawaii. I thought it was a cool topic, and I never asserted my opinion one way or the other, but said that it was important to take everything into account, and everyone I showed it to liked it. Also sent it to Pomona and Emory, so um, yeah, kinda nervous about that now… 8?/10
Work that has challenged you essay - I picked the Milgram obedience experiment and wrote about how it influenced my perception of people and taught me about how even the illusion of power is enough to make people listen to you. A little dark, but I felt that the prompt warranted it. 7/10
Common App Essay: About challenging people’s beliefs by being physically strong. It focused on my ability to do a lot of push-ups even though I’m a petite, nerdy girl. It was kind of humorous, and I spent a long time on it. Everyone who read it liked it. 9/10
Teacher Recommendation: Not sure. I picked this teacher because he saw me help out other students in his class, but it’s impossible for me to say if he wrote a lot about that in his rec.

Counselor Rec: She likes me, but it was probably kind of bland. She has 239 other kids to worry about.

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores (except SAT Math), marching band awards, maybe essays?
Weaknesses: Not a resident of VA, course load rigor could be better, only one substantial EC
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Mostly because I’m OOS. I also think that my ECs probably didn’t set me apart, so my app kind of blended in with the pack.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Rutgers and the University of Alabama

General Comments:
Kind of mixed feelings. UVa wasn’t my top choice, so I’m not overly crushed that I didn’t get in, although I’m certainly disappointed. Still a chance in RD, so it’s not all bad. Mostly, I’m just bummed because I know that it’s going to make things that much more tense in March, and the wait is going to seem even more painful. Congratulations to everyone who got in, UVa is a fantastic school, and I’m sure you will go on to do amazing things, no matter where you end up. For everyone who got deferred/rejected, I’m sure you will go on to do amazing things, no matter where you end up.

Peace out. Hasta March, CC.

Counselor Rec: Have no idea!
Additional Rec: From my speech and debate coach, we are super duper tight so I’m sure it was good.
Interview: …didn’t have one. Funny thing though was that at my Harvard interview, the guy who interviewed me said that I should apply to University of Virginia, so I did on a whim since my major is Foreign Affairs.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: What! How am I suppose to know! I applied here purely on a whim, finished my essays seconds before the deadline was due and somehow, by the grace of God, I got in!!! I am speechless and so excited because I have fallen in love with this school and I am just tickled pink!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Penn State (Accepted), University of Vermont (Accepted, Harvard University (Deferred)

General Comments: I’m really proud, not of myself but of everyone who applied. Everyone was so qualified and I have no idea how I was able to pull it off. My grandfather started purely from nothing and for him to see me go to a highly ranked university…I did it for him and me. I hope you all know how incredibly special you all are and how I know that you guys are all going to find the university where you will be happy at.

“Deferred from Ivy League school, rejected by UVa? The bias against out-of-state applicants is unreal.”

Most Ivy and similar top schools seem to use Deferral from EA/ED as a “soft” rejection.

The proportions of the class being In State or Out Of State are set by law, and have not changed. So if anything is unreal, it is the competition for the OOS seats. As it happens UVA is made up of a much larger portion of OOS students than its peers (UCLA, Berkeley, UNC, etc.).
