UVA - College at Wise and Transfer Question

let's say a person applies to UVA - Charlottesville and UVA - College at Wise... this person gets acceted to Wise but rejected from Charlottesville... now will this person have a difficult time transferring into Charlottesville if he gets good grades and stuff his first year at Wise?

also... let's say a person goes to VCU... how difficult will it be for this person to transfer into UVA after first year?

Will the fact that community college students are guaranteed admission now if they maintain a certain GPA and take the required classes adversely affect kids trying to transfer in from other VA public schools like VCU?

i'm asking for College of Arts and Sciences...

No, unless his high school stats are terrible.

Not very if he gets good grades.

No.

So, exactly how good would a VCU or ODU student's grades have to be after the first year to be accepted as a transfer into UVA??

I've heard transfer admissions aren't as "random" as freshman admissions are much more straight forward, is this true?

bumpity bumpy

wow, i didnt even know that UVA had 2 branches??

It doesn't.

what exactly is wise?

wise is a branch of uva - much like a penn state satellite campus. however, its intent was to bring a public college to southwest virginia - which didn't have one. Originally intended to be a 2 year college, it has developed into a 4 year school. I don't think that there are any advantages of going to wise with regards of gaining admissions to uva. its not a community college, so students wont benefit from the new guarrenteed admit formula.

other than that its just a small public LAC with no firm relationship to uva in charlottesville other than name.

Shadzilla, these are definitely questions you should be directing towards an admission officer. Call the Office of Admission and ask to speak with the Dean of the Day about transfer admission.

Wise is not a branch of UVA and transfer applicants from there have no benefit or disadvantage in our admission process.

The VCCS agreement will not affect the admissibility of students at the other state universities. While some people seem to think the new agreement will lead to an massive influx of community college students, the agreement's requirements are very specific and I haven't seen many VCCS applicants fulfill them completely yet.

A Dean can speak with you more about your options.

um dean j,

maybe i'm completely off...but according at least to these sources, uva-wise is a branch of uva.

of course like i said, since it is not a community college, students won't gain that admissions bonus from attending a CC.

While President Casteen is at the top of the Wise org chart, the rest of their administration is independent of ours. We don't set their admission policies or practices. I would compare our relationship to the one between William & Mary and Christopher Newport University.

Regardless of the type of school a student attends, if they have solid coursework (similar to that described in the VCCS agreement) and a top GPA, they'll be competitive in the transfer admission process. To refer back to the original question, VCU and Wise would be viewed similarly in our transfer admission process.
